FTA vs Freesat regarding subtitles

    Hi,

I'm hard of hearing. I was just wondering whether it's possible to display and record subtitles in a Free to Air box as distinct from a Freesat box, in which I believe, like a Sky box is possible.

    Thanks

A Freesat+ PVR displays, records and plays back subtitles when available.

Any FTA satellite receiver I've ever owned displayed subtitles when available. I currently own a Humax FTA satellite receiver with built-in HDD which displays, records and plays back subtitles when available.

I've never attached an external HDD to a FTA sat receiver but I assume the subtitles are recorded for playback in the same way like what happens for the video and audio data stream for any channel.

If you're moving from Sky+ then Freesat+ is the most user friendly option for the FTA sub-free channels. List of Freesat+ receivers here - http://www.freesat.co.uk/get-freesat/recommended/freesat-plus, http://www.joinfreesat.co.uk/ (rh column)

One thing I forgot to mention earlier, if you're cancelling Sky the Irish channels RTÉ1 etc. aren't available via FTA satellite, you'll require a Saorview setup i.e. aerial and Saorview TV or box. A Saorview+ recorder will be required to record the Irish channels and subtitles.

Yes, a Freesat+ box seems to be the way to go because, like you said, their ease of use (built in HDD and EPG etc) even though I noticed that the FTA boxes are a lot cheaper.

Already have a Saorview box with USB PVR function.

    Thanks
