Peoples Understanding of Deposits

What is with people paying a deposit to hold an item or a service, then deciding they don't want it and being outraged when the deposit isn't given back.
Is the basic fundamentals of the "deposit" lost on Irish people?

Plenty of deposits are refundable. I think the problem is a lot of people in general and others who work in certain places and dont come to an understanding as to whether the deposits are refundable or non refundable when said deposits are paid. Leading to the confusion outlined in your post OP.

It's not "deposit", it's "the posit".

Maybe because some Landlords see deposits as free money and will not give it back unless forced.

When I pay a visit to the lavatory I make a "deposit"

The difference between a construction industry contractor and a pigeon is that a pigeon can still put a deposit on a BMW.

Not sure the rules of the game are completely clear.
If a deposit secures an item how long do I have to pay?
Can the item be replaced by a comparable item?
If I change my mind or see the item cheaper somewhere else can I have my deposit back?

If a refund isn't set out in writing, then theres no refund.
I meet people who would argue, even when a deposit is clearly marked non-refundable, that they should get their money back.
You put €20 on a Christmas jumper you forgot about it and in March you remember wen your in the shop looking for a Paddys Day jumper and you want your €20 back? Shag off.

If people don't understand that it is a nonrefundable deposit then it's likely your fault for not stating the terms or having them acknowledge that they understand it isn't refundable.

No. I have taken the deposit receipt off people and read out loud "This deposit is non-refundable" and they will answer "Yes i know but I changed my mind almost immediately I don't want the car now. Don't you see??"

Glass beer bottles used to have a deposit on them, bring the empties back to the off-license and they'll give you back a ha'penny or two.

The rules are perfectly clear. It's just that they vary from company to company. Each has it's own T&Cs and the customer should clarify what they are before paying any deposit, it's hardly rocket science to check before paying.

It might be written on the receipt. But before they even gave the money, did you make it plain that the deposit was nonrefundable?

"This deposit is non-refundable OK? So you need to be sure that this is what you want."
    "OK, no I'm sure"
    Later today.
    Sweet smile
"The credit union said I can't have the loan till I've paid off the last loan. Is there any chance I'd get my deposit back?"

What I would like to ask posters here is this.
What did you think the vendor was getting out of the deposit.
By the way. Consumer advice sides with the vendor. While your item was on layaway, to borrow an American phrase , the vendor couldn't sell it. That's a fact.
