Sister has 05 golf worth 5500 working as far as I know good speck one.
She had a warning light misdiagnosed as ah its nothing to worry about.
She now needs a new engine.
5500 from dealer but Im sure thered be a gaurantee.
Anything she can consider. Advice needed. Money tight.

Who exactly "disregarded" the warning light?

Who exactly "disregarded" the warning light?

Im not sure some indy garage I think. Told her it was just the air con.
Anyway with the new engine would it be pretty much like a new car.
If she spent the 5500 on a another yoke would she be risking a dodgey car again?

Get a second hand engine from a breakers, no point putting a brand new engine in a 05 car.
What exactly is wrong with the old engine? Its not often an engine light would result in too much damage to an engine, maybe an oil or coolant light.

Im not sure of the light. Valves are blown and all sorts.
A mechanic towed it off because it wouldnt start. She was thinking it needed a new coil pack.
It got dropped back an hour later. Mechanic didnt want/couldnt do it.
The light was coming on for over a year she got it reset a few times.
Would a brand new 05 engine not be good for 200 000 or so miles as opposed to chancing a second hand one?

I most likely be good for that mileage, but car in not only the engine. You have gearbox, suspension, bodywork, electrics, etc, which might not last that long.

It doesn't really make any economical sense to put brand new engine to 9 year old car.

This just in : its an 07 not 05.
I take it the same advice will still be given.
Maybe she can trade it off a smaller cheaper crapper car.

Presuming its the 1.4? Find an engine from a scrap yard, might be tough though as they aren't unknown to go wrong.

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 1,590 ✭✭✭jane82

She has a fella.coming out to look at it as a trade in. He says hell drop 2000 to 2500 off something for her.
Its the chance a new second hand car or the used second hand engine question.
Think just getting the trade is the way to go.

Many people have bought second hand and reconditioned engines and put them in no bother. Obviously there could be risks, but what doesn't carry risks?

New engine about 800 max, labour to put it in 4-500=1200-1300 to fix it. I wouldn't waste my time putting new engines in, find one out of a crashed car . Have a look on ebay UK. Most will ship the engine for a pallet cost of 100 or so.

An 07 golf with an engine gone is worth serious money in donedeal damage repairables section, multiples of 2 to 3 k.

It sounds like the timing belt broke, engine light on doesn't mean the belt was on the way out.

On the new engine , it'll come in various states of completeness depending on the supplier, but it will be far from all new, ie , power steering pump, alternator starter will not be included , and maybe not injectors, coil packs, air flow meter, clutch, etc etc, so there's still a lot to go wrong, these parts will all be transferred from the old unit.
Where is the car based, a good mechanic would fix current engine for about half the 5500 or less.
Is it petrol or diesel and how many miles ?

Its an 07 1.4 tsi with 70 000 miles on her. North dublin.

I'm genuinely curious where you will source a brand new Golf engine for €800.

I think he meant new second hand engine.

Ok, that may make more sense.

1.4 TSi Golfs were rare enough down here, best thing to do is give Traynors up in the North a ring and see if they have one second hand or reconditioned. Traynors are a big UK based scrap dealer. Just make sure you have the correct engine code as there were a number of different versions of the VAG 1.4 TSi engine.

Ah think ill go trade or try sell. I cant change a radio without something going wrong. Cars hate me. Id end up ordering 6 engines before I got the right one haha.

Ok so it's a 1.4 tsi 170 bhp, that's supercharged and turbocharged ,if so a garage that does a lot of work for me did two of these recently.

Most recent 1.4 TSI needed four new pistons, previous one needed timing chain done, both low kms and both serviced well.

I'd guess the timing chain stretched causing the frequent eng light and subsequently snapped.

Only consolation is it would have cost around 2 k to get the chain done as it's engine out job so she would've been out of pocket anyway.
Current damage is prob 16 valves four pistons, possible two camshafts and head damage , hence new engine recomendation. 4 pistons are 800 euro alone and not available elsewhere than vw.

I wouldn't chance a second hand unit in one of these , as they are fierce troublesome Even at low miles, and full history.

So I think sell on donedeal as is, damaged repairable and surprisingly it might make 5 or 6 k, mechanics buy stuff like this for themselves and their better halves, often paying over the odds.
    Good luck.
Ps I can pm details of the Indy garage that did the two of these recently, if you want, south west dublin.

Replacing the timing chain and associated parts on a TSI is not an engine out job and costs nothing like €2k.

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 1,590 ✭✭✭jane82

Yeah it was the chain snapped. Warning light just happened to be on as well.
    2500 sold.
    Thanks for the advice.

Just on the other topic, don't neglect your management light, clearing the faults doesn't fix the problem.

While were on the topic I recently blew my '03 Mk1 Focus 1.4L engine.
Got a local indy to source & fit a 1.6L for €550, engine came out of a '04 write off that had only done 76k miles.

Garage told me price was cheap as if they charged more people would just replace the car.

Big difference between a 1.6 Focus engine and a 1.4 TSI though...

Chain was probably stretched, timing was wrong, giving the engine management warning. Then it snapped wrecking the engine. A timing chain should last the lifetime of a car and certainly shouldn't snap at 7 years old and only 70k miles

Did your sister contact Volkswagen Ireland? It is quite possible that they will cover some / all of the cost of the engine replacement. There is a similar issue with the timing chain of one BMW 4 cylinder diesel engine (made from '07 - '10 or thereabouts) and they pay for most of the fix, but only if the car has done less than 100k miles and was serviced by BMW

Too late now haha. It had no service history when she bought it second hand though.

More than likely bad servicing which messed up the tensioner on the chain. Its a shame really because their a nice car, and decent power too.
