Massy's Wood, Dublin

Hey, does anyone know if it's possible to enter Massy's wood from the south/Rockbrook side?

I was just hoping to get the bus to Rockbrook and walk up from there. However I know you have to walk past a stud (as in horses) to get up to Massy's that side, and I couldn't tell if it was private property or not, or if there was even a way in.

For what it's worth, here's where I'm talking about: https://mapsengine.google.com/map/edit?mid=z6p2Zkp8hVOM.klafkyhSnsgU

    Anyone? Thanks.

You can access via Lamberts Lane off Cruagh Lane.

It is a public road so you should have no access problems.

That's great, thanks. I was a bit confused last time I was down there because there's a gate at the entrance to Lambert's Lane isn't there? Which makes it look kinda private.

Straight past the stables is fine. Never an issue, and i always say hi to the owners/staff.

As I understand it, that gate is a legacy from the time when the lane was one of the entrances to the old Massy/Kilakee Estate. I think the small cottage on the left is an old gate lodge from the estate.

That location is also where the Wicklow Military Road originally started. The public road was routed through the Massy Estate. If you go down the lane and though the forest barrier and then continue straight ahead in the direction of the Hell Fire Club, you will notice you are on a very wide path. This is part of the Military Road and if you look closely, you can see in some places some of the original road surface from when it was built after the 1798 Rebellion.

Slightly off topic but it is interesting to know the history of the Massy Estate

    http://localstudies.wordpress.com/2013/04/24/the-massys-of-killakee/

" In 1924 the 6th Baron’s grandson, Hugh Hamon 8th Baron Massy, was evicted from Killakee House. Having declared himself ill and taken to his bed, he refused to vacate the house and was carried by the bailiffs from the house and deposited on the public roadway at the nearest estate gateway (now the entrance to Timbertrove on the Killakee Road). Killakee House was taken over by a bank in lieu of debts and, unable to find a purchaser, it was sold for its scrappage value and demolished in 1941."
