I fitted a pair of Michelin Pro4 SC tyres with red side walls on my bike and my wife came out to the garage after i'd finished and declared them 'ghey'

I liked them till that point, now I'm not so sure. What's everyone's opinions on coloured tyres and mine in particular?

All black. Or black and tan.

    Nothing else floats my boat.

i like them, would suit my bike colouring too

As an aside, how to you find the racing quattros? I have just bought some too, hoping to avoid brake rub due to wheel flex. Most wheels have weight limits, which if you are tall, then you plus bike can easily be at the limit

Red or Blue, maaaaybe yellow...anything else would weird me out.

They suit the bike perfectly. Tell the wife "at least I didn't marry a ghey"

I asked the same question before I put yellow vittorias on mine. Love them now and will buy another set definitely while they're still cheap.

I've got the same tyres, but with white sidewalls. Nice retro look, like a 1950s car

I love them. I know there are lighter wheels out there but for the price (€240 from Bike24 last year) they're hard to beat. I'm 76kg and find no wheel flex but then again I wouldn't be a balls out sprinter. They roll very freely and there's a really nice hum from them, the free wheel is virtually silent on mine and so the hum from the wheels is probably more noticeable. I think they're one of the best looking wheels available bar none.

Never use black tyres if there are other colours available.
The red suits the bike OP.

The red tyres really suit the felt. Leave them on definitely.

Probably not the clearest picture of my steed, but I’m running similar tires on Fulcrum 5’s and think they look pretty good. I wouldn't be worried about tires looking “ghey” anyway there’s plenty other cycling activities to concern you when you consider we spent hours at a time bent over working up a sweat in front of other men wearing skin tight lycra talking about how best to loose weight and what Café does the nice scones ;-)

On yours, yay. It works with the hints of red on the bike.

I have white-ish gumwalls on my good bike and yellow gumwalls on my town bike. And if I had a Guv'nor or similar 650b roadster/porteur, I'd probably have white tyres on.

    Depends on the bike, really.

I'm not exactly a sprinter (or a climber). My Mavics were easy to move onto the brakes out of the saddle though and they certainly don't spin as smoothly as the Fulcrums. The Fulcrums definitely make a nice hum. Thanks for the info.

I can feel a shifty towards Campag happening...

I ended with white sidewalled rubinios one time cos I can't use the interweb properly. I liked them. This time I've deliberately went for blue. Won't fit them for another few weeks as I still have all black winter tyres installed.

I have aksiums on my Ridley and can get them to flex on out of saddle pedalling without much effort, they're definitely not as strong/rigid as the quattros.

Thanks for all the opinions, I think i'll keep them. I havent been out on them yet, I hope they live up to the 4~5 star ratings they've been getting on several websites.

@ OP,the red tyres suit youre bike, but please for the love of God will you align them correctly on the rim?

The red tires look great on your bike, love them. They look normal with the red on the frame. There is not enough colour in the world. The other red and yellow shod bikes look great too. Break out the rainbow!

Those tires look brilliant on your bike. I would.

They were aligned with the valves when I started putting them on but they were an absolute bitch to put on the rims and moved and so theyre staying that way for now as i aint taking them off for that reason. I've read that others have had problems fitting them too (depends on the rim apparently) but they do loosen up a bit and so i'll align them once they've had a few miles on them and they've been deflated and inflated a few times.

The tyres look fine, in my view, but the whole bike clashes with your garage so the garage has to go. I'll take if off your hands, 'cos I'm sound like that...

Actually I've read before that black tyre compound has the best road grip and that grip decreases once you add colour to the rubber. I've no idea if it's really true but it seems vaguely plausible. Hasn't stopped me using coloured tyres but probably plays at least some part in me favouring all-black tyres generally.

They look good, but make sure no one else local has them, you need to be the only ghey in the village.....

black. other colors dont grip as well.

I think at least a part of that idea is down to Continental's marketing, and how much stock you put in their Black Chili compound. Now I'm not detracting from this before it looks that way (I have GPs on my bike), but they only put the compound in their black ones, and they do market them as the grippiest options. There used to be a page somewhere actually stating it was only in the black version of a particular tyre that came in both coloured and black.

I've read similar stories but have never seen any evidence to prove it but I did consider it when buying the tyres. The Michelin Pro4's have a puncture protection belt which seems to be an extra band of rubber that is bonded along the centre line of the tyre. This is found on them all no matter what colour they are. Generally with coloured tyres the tyre is black and the coloured stripe added somehow but with the Pro4's the whole tyre is actually red (inside) and the black puncture band appears bonded to the red tyre so it seems the coloured tyres are moulded from coloured rubber and the black puncture strip added afterwards so there should be no difference no matter what the colour.

These are the only coloured tyres allowed:

Isn't there also something about tyres with coloured walls having less rolling resistance and better road feel, due to the lack of the 'hardening' black carbons giving too much structure to the walls? Could be complete BS.

You could have something there as the sidewalls on the Pro4's are very very soft compared to other tyres I have, it wouldn't take much to puncture them I reckon.

Doing a quick bit of research and there's something to it alright. But to be honest, I for one would need to make myself a lot more... 'aerodynamic' before it would have any real world effect on my cycle.

    I think they look grate!
Especially clever as they match the garage door sticker.
Please post a pic of your wife and and we can add more comment.

PS - there are no gheys interested in sport; no idea what she was on about there.

Pro4's are available with pink sidewalk. Schwalbe Ultremos are available with pink stripe. For tassles, try Smyths or Toys-R-us.
