VAT Registration Cert

Hi, I'm self employed and as such set up a limited company a number of years back of which I'm one of two directors. Recently took on a contract where an agency looks after the payroll of the client.

They've asked for a lot of paperwork my end, most of which hasn't been a problem. However one requirement, a vat registration cert has me a bit stumped. Doesn't ring a bell and can't find it in my office paperwork so not sure if I ever received one.

Can't find any information on revenues site either. As the agency requesting it is the Dublin branch of a UK agency not sure if these are generic UK requirements and not applicable to Ireland.

    Any help appreciated.

    Cheers

VAT registration is not mandatory if your trade is below a certain amount. Just tell them you aren't registered. If you were you would know about it...

If you expect to do a lot of trading (which will bring you over the threshold) then you will have to register. Talk to accountant.

My reading of the OP is that the company IS VAT registered but just that he doesn't have a registration cert of the type this UK crowd are looking for...

If that's the case OP, you should simply provide your VAT registration number to this crowd - they can verify it as a valid number on the EU website. The tax office will have written to you at the time of registering, confirming what tax heads you were registered for and from what dates - ie a letter, not a Cert.

    Hi,

You could do one of two things.

    1) send them a soft copy of the top half of your VAT 3 return which shows name, address & VAT number with Rev Comm. logo etc.

    2) send them your VAT number & the following link where they can verify your VAT number.

    http://ec.europa.eu/taxation_customs/vies/

Hi Barney, that's correct. Few crossed wires, what they were referring to as a vat registration cert was simply the letter revenue sent me years back when I set up stating I was now registered. Bit of a strange one to ask for as all it was was revenue headed paper with my vat number on it, nothing more.

Unfortunately I can't find it, moved offices twice since registering so may have mislaid it. Besides up until now it was the vat reg number that was important, not a piece of paper confirming I'd registered!

Anyway looks like they're finally going to accept a screenshot of my ros which is what I suggested over a week ago.

    Cheers for the help guys

Hi Swanvill, tried the first option day I was in with them. Had a few revenue letters, i.e. assessments, returns etc with my vat reg clearly stated but for some reason not acceptable.

Thanks for the second option, just tried it though and got "Member State service unavailable. Please re-submit your request later."?

Might be down at the moment though. Anyway as I said in my reply to Barney looks like a screenshot of my ros homepage might do it.

    Cheers

It's not down it works perfectly for me. Fill out all the boxes properly.

As said above, you absolutely do not need the registration cert. The UK guys are just being morons. All you have to do is give them your VAT number, it's up to them to verify it - which can easily be done on that official website.

I did fill it in properly, not rocket science :) Anyway working now with same details as I tried earlier and surprise surprise I have a valid number!

I agree though, they're being a bit stupid alright, contracting for years and vat registration number until now has been fine.
