Just starting a thread strictly for NAT discussions on the Playstation Network.

PlayStation Network requires you to forward the following ports: 80,443,465,983,3478-3479,3658,5223,10070-10080.

    1. Assign a manual IP to your PS3/PS4.
    2. Set up port forwarding for the above ports on your router.
    3. Turn off both Router and PS4 for approx 10 secs before turning back on. (Make sure to disconnect both from power).

I'll do up a proper guide this evening when I get my PS4.

Each router is different but the principal is the same in all cases.

Below is an example of a Linksys WAG320N which I have including.
I also have a TP link and the UPC Horizon box which is very easy to set up port forwarding on.

Excuse my ignorance here but what difference will this make? Is it much different from just leaving it as it is. Also does the router matter? Im with eircom and have one of their routers so is there a different set up for them.

Not trying to be a dick but I think you'll find that PSN DOESN'T require you to forward those ports. On proper routers [priced >= €50 generally], the router itself handles this via uPNP. What you've stated above normally comes from eircom customers who have the ****ty Netgear [or xyzel] routers they [used to] provide.

Have a more open NAT allows a better connections.
It will also allow you to host matches eg COD etc. It generally results in a much more lag free gaming experience.

Open NATs can connect to any of the three types
Moderate can only connect to open and moderate
Strict can ONLY connect to open

Again, you're speaking in eircom router lingo.

You do know that other routers are also similiar?
I've had to do the same for my Cisco/Linksys routers as well as having to do the same for my UPC router. (Samsung horizon box).
There's a lot of people having problems in the multiplayer threads so it's no harm in having a separate thread for people that do want an Open NAT..upnp isn't the solution for everyone.

To be fair, OpenNAT [NAT1] isn't the solution for 99% of people. It's not the solution for the other 1% either but they don't give a ****. They just want it "working" then complain if they want to stream from their LAN.

True indeed but if they only use it for gaming sure let them off with it :)
I have found it a vast improvement on my Xbox for game matching etc so I could be proven wrong for PSN :)
Will know shortly when I pick it up this evening.

Wondering if this might help me as I've just got a ps4 and upgraded my UPC sub to 200mb d/l. When I wire my laptop directly I get 200mb on numerous speed tests.

With my ps4 wired(and tried with ps3, too) I only get up to 60mb d/l so far.

    How are you testing it?
I know the Xbox 1 ran a built in diagnostics test for network and I was getting 198meg.
Is the PS4 wired directly to the box? I'm on upc 200meg as well so I'll check in a while if you can test it.

Exactly my question, how are you testing download speeds to the PS4?

    Is it by PSN speeds?

Just ran the inbuilt test on the ps4 and it's woeful, 20meg down, 3 meg up when it sud be 200/10.
It looks to be a very common issue with the ps4
Wifi same speeds , that's pissing me off big time now, at least the xb1 was constantly 198meg/9.8 meg

A lot of people blame the psn network it seems as speeds fluctuate a lot.

Tested my internet this morning and over wireless my notebook in the next room was getting 60down/10 up.
    My PS4? Same crappy speeds.
People are saying issue only happened recently so could be a firmware issue..at least they're hoping that it is that and not a hardware issue.
Seems to be a widespread issue atm.

Some more checks- Even though the PS4 reports those slow speeds it's bombing through downloading DC universe online so I'm definitely getting near full speeds.
What was weird was that I tried speed tests through the broswer last night and they returned similiar slow results.
Ah well..as long as it stays lag free and still downloads full speed it's not really an issue...bit annoying though,.

I think the ps4 just grabs the quickest dwnload and up load speed in the test the instant you press it
if I was gett kbs speed id be worrying

has anyone confirmed if this helps the connections for online games?
I've just gotten COD Ghosts and I'm getting very bad lag, which is strange because I also have BF4 which has practically no lag

What NAT type are you seeing in network?

I'm still on type 2 nat .however I didn't forward port 80 as other devices in my house use that port as well.

What you could do is place your PS4 into the DMZ temporarily and see if that resolves your lag issue. Your NAT should be Type 1 in the DMZ or type 2 at the highest.

How would I do all of that now? I have an eircom D1000 Modem i that makes any difference.
My NAT type on the ps4 is type 2

Here's the eircom pdf for it..

    http://broadbandsupport.eircom.net/download/zyxel/eircom_D1000.pdf

NAT and DMZ are on pages 125 onwards. Have a quick read through but read the start of it first on how to log onto the router etc.
any probs or questions you want to ask before doing anything fire away :)

I was having the same problem. The game was virtually unplayable. Changed from wireless to wire and bang, problem solved.

Also just to chime in onto the discussion about speed tests on PS4, Im with UPC 150mb broadband. Both my PS3 & PS4 are wired directly to the UPC Horizon box and the most I ever get on a speed test is 20 - 30mb down & 2-5mb up.

Playstation tests are just indicative of good online experience. They are not representative of the actual speed of the line.
