Charge back for faulty item received from ebay store

I bought an Android table from an ebay store in early December as a Christmas present for a family member. When I received the item the seal on the box was broken but otherwise appeared to be brand new. I gave the device as a present and when the family member started using it it became apparent after a couple of week that there was something seriously wrong with it. I contacted Google and went through detailed troubleshooting steps including wiping the device, they came to the conclusion that it was most likely a hardware fault and that it would have to be returned to the point of purchase. The problem is by the time we came to this conclusion it was outside the 45 day dispute resolution time for paypal. I tried contacting the ebay seller multiple times through the ebay message system and directly by email which I got from their paypal account. They are probably well aware of the 45 day dispute time limit so have chosen to ignore me so far :(

Paypal advised me to contact my bank to organise a charge back. I've done this and will be sending in the details to them shortly so I get it in before the 90 day limit is reached in 10 days. What I'm wondering is how does the charge back process work? I've never had to do this before so I am I guaranteed my money back and will it be a long drawn out process? Is it worth emailing the seller again to tell them I've started a charge back process to give them a chance to resolve this without all the hassle?

You fill out a form, you are covered once you card is VISA / VISA debit etc.

Look up the conditions for chargeback though I wasn't aware that a faulty item was one of the conditions, I thought it had to be not as described etc.

I'd tell the seller as if you do get your chargeback their paypal will be in a minus. they may get their finger out!

Yeah I was reading this and it seems like I'm covered where it says "The goods were delivered to you but were faulty or not as described". I spoke to BOI as well and they just told me to send in all the documentation I have like emails and receipts so going to do that today and see how it goes I suppose.

May I ask what does a Chargeback cover. What eventualities, just for future reference. Anything other than not as described?

Not sure exactly what you mean? In my case the online retailer won't respond to my communications in relation to a faulty item so I should be able to initiate a chargeback to get the entire amount of the transaction refunded to me?
