Hi, I've been teaching in Madrid for the past 4 years, mostly business english and in the summers I've worked in an academy in Dublin.

I was just wondering about coming back to Ireland....is there much full-time work around? What are the chances of getting a decent job and what is the pay/hours like? I've seen a few part-time offers but I'd need full-time to be able to live off it. Or should I change careers?

Also, I'm thinking of doing the DELTA - does anyone know will academies pay more for that, will it benefit me financially in any way?

Basically even if you have experience in ireland and have all the required qualifications and jumped through all the appropriate hoops it is near impossible at the moment to get as job with enough hours to take home more pay than a pizza delivery job.

are you working in the sector? Are there full time jobs going or just the 10-15hrs work? Even if you work between 2 academies could you make up a 25/30hr timetable?

Hi rcarroll I can't help you really but maybe you can help me? I have many business qualifications and business experience and have recently completed ACELS qualification. I want to teach English as a business language. What school / company in Madrid did you work for. Can you give me low down on employer, pay rates and clientele? Money not important now for me I just want to get some experience.

As for you, maybe contact Galway Language school or Atlantic College, Galway. I know there a re lots of foreign students in Galway during the summer months - but if it's business English as a specialty sorry I can't help. I'm a newbie myself and just in the process of researching.

Hi, thanks for the reply - I can get work during the summer, it was year-round work I was interested in, but thanks anyway.

There are hundreds of academies in Madrid, you should have no problem getting work. The pay varies from €13-18p/h on contract, up to €26/28 freelance p/h. Private classes you can charge anything from €15 (though I've seen lower) to €25/30p/h again, depending on how many students in the class or where you have to travel to the cost can change.

These would be for in-company classes, usually business/general english. There are also lots of offers for kids/adults classes where you work on-site in an academy in the evenings usually. They offer block hours which is good but lower pay.

I've worked for a few academies, check out lingobongo.com for ads. Clientele will be anything from banks, retailers, insurance, finance, gas/electricity companies etc.
