New Civic tourer launched : go for 1.6 diesel or 1.8 petrol?

    Honda is launching the new civic tourer ( estate ). My father is thinking of getting one. There is €300 difference between the petrol ( about 25.7k ) and the diesel, (about 26k ) http://www.honda.ie/new-cars/civic-tourer

    He does not know very much about cars but likes the look of the new tourer and he is downsizing from an old CRV. Are people happy with the civic hatchback, which I think the tourer is based on? To me it seems a bit cramped but I suppose there has to be compromises somewhere. I'm not sure about the styling of the back of the new tourer either, think its not quite right, what do you think?

    Well the most important information is mileage and type of driving?

    Diesel all the way tbh.

    I have a 1.8 petrol older shape and its great but buying one in 2014 is financial suicide.

    Unless he's doing tiny mileage.

    He does not do big mileage. The 1.8 petrol is supposed to 6.2 litres / 100km ( which is 45.5 mpg ) in combined driving.

    Wonder if that figure is easily achieveable in the real world or if the engines have improved since the older shape?

    I think the current tourer is the same weight as the old hatchback (1280kg -ish)
    Late 30s to early 40s is probably doable

    The diesel is highly regarded though, and unless he doesn't do any long journies it'd probably be a better choice.

    I think the 1.8 engine is largely the same as I was. Like the crv, the engine is a bit boomy.
