Budget 1000 - 1500 recommendations?

Looking to get myself a motor. It will be used mostly up and down to Kildare from cork 3/4 times a month. Myself and the wife share a car at the minute and the problem lies that I be away 1 or 2 weekends a month and it leaves her car less when I'm gone.
Realistically the car will sit for 6 days out of 7 in the street with the odd local spin. Public transport is not an option for me due to timings and awkwardness of where I go to.

I'm thinking along the lines of a clio/206 or an Astra/focus. I don't think the mileage would suit a diesel when I factor in tax and servicing, and my heart was broke with a diesel before.

I would welcome any suggestions,

1000-1500 would only get you a dirtbox of a diesel with intergalactic mileage.

A cheap, reliable, petrol Jap is the way to go... I'd suggest a 1.4 Civic, 1.3 Colt or Toyota Corolla.
