I heard recently about a newcomer to kilmihill who was amazed to learn BB is truly awful. I think they are paying for up to 24mb!! I had a look on the eircom fibre map and it shows that cooraclare has fibre, its about a mile from kilmihill but the population of kilmihil is 650 plus and I doubt if cooraclare has anything like that. So why is eircom ignoring Kilmihill.

The speed in Kilihill is 2.55mb down and thats the max ie if you are the only person awake.

I think the TD who keeps spouting about 30mb should be made aware.

And is this not an ideal set up for community bb and cock a snoop at eircom?

I've been asking the same question for years :(

You would hardly call what is in kilmihil broadband

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 478 ✭✭sibergoth

    Exactly.

The exchange is capable of 24Mbps. But the backhaul is a microwave link fixed at 16Mbps for the entire village.... That's why every subscriber is limited to 2.5 and you'll only actually see that in the middle of the night when everyone is offline...

    Or about 5 miles https://maps.google.ie/maps?saddr=Cooraclare&daddr=Kilmihil,+Clare&hl=en&ll=52.711963,-9.369621&spn=0.086317,0.244446&sll=52.709675,-9.364471&sspn=0.345283,0.977783&geocode=Ff4tJAMdWUlw_ynpF0pqMOBaSDHQ9zGXqccACg%3BFWV1JAMdPcVx_ymdM6qI3x5bSDFgtTGXqccACg&dirflg=w&mra=ltm&t=m&z=12

I presume Cooraclare is on Kilrush exchange

    Kilrush Urban 2,539
    Cooraclare 535
    Total 3074

    Kilmihil 626
So why is eircom ignoring Kilmihill.
The Karst Limestone prevents magic from working.

    The what?

We aren't asking for magic. Just sensible investment in infrastructure...

Mullagh got broadband before it even got a sewage scheme.

Broadband came there because it was close to Miltown.

The place badly needs some form of decent internet

thanks for replies. The karts limestone cant be blamed as there is none in Kilmhill.

    Look here.

    http://www.gsi.ie/programmes/groundwater/karst+booklet/importance+of+limestone+and+karst.htm

and it has historic significance but not sure about the spelling.

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kilmihil

imagine a tourist stopping off in Kilmihill and told BB is 2.55mb if your lucky.

I must admit I am appalled. If I was living in Kilmihill I would approach the ESB immediately and offer oursevles up as a trial for their ESB Fibre powered BB, just think of the publicity they would gain. But one can dream.

Where is the exchange in Kilmihill?

    Is cooraclare that densely populated?

Well say a mile in a fast car.

Cooraclare is not densely populated. But I reckon it is because it is close to kilrush that it gets bb

Ripplecom? They cover the general area, but it probably depends on where exactly you live and whether you have line-of-sight to their mast.

they hate you.... no no in all seriousness its down to costs as it always is.

it probably will cost more than its worth at the moment to upgrade that area

Eircom is a privately owned company... they are under no obligation to provide a service to an area where they will make a huge loss on. if you choose to live in ballybackarseofnowhere its not eircom nor any other isp's fault if u get slow service. they are private companies trying to make a profitable return on their investments.. eircom is NOT P&T anymore get used to that idea

freddy I diasgree, KILMIHILL is very close to DOONBEG and that has a huge profile, also Klmihill is only 2 miles off the main route between ENNIS and KILRUSH. Its about 20 mins from Ennis, in other words it is very accrssible.

Eircom have done the dirty and left them high and dry and Eircom should be grateful for any customers. It would appear Eircom are getting away with muder in Kilmihill, ie charging for up to 24mb and allowing, not giving but allowing ie throttling back the service. Everyone in kilmihil should move lock stock and barrel to VF and cock a snoop to Eircon.

Or better still form a local community BB. For crying out crying out loud 2.55mb if you are lucky and we have posts on here about eircom 100mb and then big waffle about ESB BB fibre.

I would haunt that TD and Eircom and comreg and VF and Sky for not putting a bit back to the customers. How much would it cost to run a line from kilrush on poles, not a lot.

You've no idea how things work man. Eircom Wholesale installs and owns the lines. Doesnt matter to them which provider you chose, they get paid all the same.

Its not just location related to other towns, its in relation to national grid nodes, and existing ducting. And a full replacement of an exchange is going to be the hundreds of thousands of euros, try making that back with maybe 400 subscribers. Long time till it pays for itself.

Another factor is expected uptake, certain areas will have a higher percentage of the populace that are likely to use broadband than others. Areas with an ageing rural population would be low on that list I'd wager.

A picture is a thousand words....

    0JTmO1W.jpg

Its nowhere near the NGN network so the backhaul isnt there to connect it to. Dont hold your breath on it being upgraded.

the exchange is just outside the village on the Kilrush road, near the graveyard... (what does that tell you!)

i am 1 mile from the exchange and my line tests capable of 12Mbps (eircom engineer line tester) but that is useless since everyone is capped at 2.55

if there was a way to sell the house i would move to somewhere better served, but no one will ever buy my house and the lack of decent internet just makes it even harder to sell.. i certainly wouldn't buy or even rent a house where there wasn't decent internet...

i am really quite FKN SICK of this now... i hope and dream that 3 will bring 4G out to us........... what else can we do ?

a single fibre cab costs over 100 grand... now try install a dozen in a village thats 1.2 mil already before the fibre is even laid in the the road ducting.

Really? Seems a little high, but its certainly not cheap.

In any case thats exactly what I was getting at. Not viable.

    Careful what you wish for.

You could try sending a petition. It would be interesting to find out just how many signatures it takes before their commercial instincts start to become aroused.
