What do you like to see at shows?

Question: At a classic car show, what cars do you like to see? I'm asking because I have a rather scruffy 1983 Ford Fiesta L MK1, on old Irish plates. Now, its a fine runner, and its not rusty or anything - I use it a lot. Its just a bit rough. I'm thinking about bringing it along to a few shows with my Wolseley, a 1969 1300 Automatic. What think ye?

I have to say I prefer to see young 'uns not wearing a whole lot than an old Fiesta!

For me it's stuff from the50's/60's that I remember as a kid. Preferably genuine Irish reg. Naked as the day it came out of the wombfactory!
Normal signs of wear wouldn't be a problem.
I've seen a lot worse than that Fiesta being shown with pride!

love that fiesta, would love to check it out at a show. for me I love to see 70s and 80s cars but them it might just be an age thing with me as these are the cars I grew up with and am familiar with. I think older cars like from the 50s and older all kinda look the same to me...

I think any car that you don't see out and about in daily traffic any more is worth a look.

IMO..i'd rather see a scruffy (but usable) old car on irish plates than a minter import ..;)

Funny...i was watching The Professionals the other day and they parked on a street where every car was a classic....but not back then.....wonder in 30 years time how many older collectables from today, will be collectable...

Irish reg 60's and pre 1960s and commercials esp. Think commercials are very under represented (prob due the Irish trait of driving everything into the ground) and there seems to be a scarcity of 20's/30's non imported stuff, is it the case that their owners don't bring them out anymore?
Think 80's / 90's stuff is a bit meh, no style imho, but that's just me. Maybe they'll grow on me eventually.

Im not big on the Escort/Cortina/Capri scene plus a lot of the old english makes that used to be common here in times gone by. Simply because you see a lot of them at shows I suppose. I like to see German/Italian/Jap stuff, American muscle cars, Yank tanks and anything thats exotic, rare and unusual.

When I go to shows, I try to see everything on display no matter what it is,
I've recently developed an interested in unrestored vehicles even if they are a bit rough.

nothing wrong with that fiesta at a show ,, it should be more than welcome at any show ..

70s/80s cars for me and would love to see more ( genuine) irish cars and commericals attending

Thanks for the replies, I'll bring it along to a few shows and see how it goes.

i prefer to see the used classics myself , the show and shine type of displays doesnt really do it for me  , i always give the carpark of any classic or vintage show a checking out as theres nearly always something used and driven parked up

no point in having a classic car if you cant use it properly when ever you want , rather than just having it on the road in summer

Once again, great stuff. These are my two. I'll be trying to get to as many shows as possible this year, if you happen to see either be sure to say hello.

Yes lovely. But I'm biased my first and second cars were 1983 fiesta's

Cars were made for one purpose. To be driven.
I have a few classics and I drive at least one every day.
Its easy to have a shining classic with sparkling paint.
But an unrestored car with a few war wounds does it for me everytime

Perfect. I have both the Fiesta and Wolseley, and a 1996 Honda Legend JDM, I like interesting cars and I like being able to keep them on the road. I've been driving the Fiesta as my daily driver for the past week while my OH had the Legend (my usual daily driver). I probably won't be able to drive them everyday, but they will get a lot of use.

Kaiser D, that Wolsley looks superb. Did you restore it or buy it like that?
    What year is it?
Thats the type of car I enjoy at shows or on the street. I suppose it's down to what each of us regard as a 'classic'.
For some it's luxury cars, for others it's yanktanks or sports cars or ordinary common cars.
To each his own, I suppose!

Thank you very much, its 1969. I wouldn't say I restored it, just recommissioned after 6 years off the road. This is how I got it in January and how it looks now.

It doesn't look like much, but everything has been mechanical and just getting it running right. I've been a solid month working on it. I didn't have to do anything to the bodywork other than wash the grime off, it hadn't seen a drop of rain in the 6 years it was stored away, luckily.

If you go to any classic car show you will see (at least Ford-wise) heaps and heaps of Cortinas and Escorts, a MKI Feshty will always stand out, simply because it's something different.
There was the big VW meet at the racecourse in Limerick and in the watercooled section where rows and rows of MKI Golfs. All very good and nice, but what stole the show for me was a lemon yellow VW Derby, simply because you just don't see them anymore.
I don't have a better pic of it right now:

    How awesome is that?
Makes me want to have one, or maybe the original Polo or Audi 50.
The small, pedestrian, bog standard models never survive, so if you have one, it will draw more attention than the bigger ones.

    That is so awesome!
My grandfather had one just like it (minus the wheels) and he had just gotten delivery of it the other day.
He took us all for a drive (or rather he took the car for a drive and we where allowed to come) and I sat in the back, only a wee nipper.
"Are you OK?" "Yes" "Are you OK?" "Yes" "Are you OK?" "Yes" "Are you OK?" "Yesbleeeeeuuuuurrrgghhh!!!"
I don't think he ever forgave me! :D

But as much as I love old Audis, I meant the much humbler Audi 50, I don't think one even exists in the country:

The shows of late are really coming on but I always thought the car parks were a better bet than the shows inside so rock on with the fiesta!

How would you tell the difference between an import with fake old irish plates and the same model but genuinely first registered in Ireland when new? There is no difference between most old cars imported from the uk and irish supplied ones. I don't get the draw an original irish plate holds. Please try to explain it ?

It would be like trying to explain why some people in Ireland have an obsession with premier league football and Eastenders.
See this car, does it make a blind bit of difference what kind of number plate it has ?

It's a load of scrap mate! Sell it to me( scrap value). Seriously though nice little car I wouldn't be ashamed of it. And as soon as my s1rsturbo escort rs turbo is gone I'll be after one as a project. If you feel like selling pm me.

I love seeing oddball stuff like this Irish reg Wartburg 311, one of maybe 100 sold here, survived because the engine packed up when it was 3 years old and it was stuck in a shed for nearly 40 years as getting parts for it was nigh on impossible.

I went to the monthly cars and coffee meet in Limerick.
1st Sunday of every month, from around 11am at City East Plaza if anyone is interested, very informal, just bring yourself and a car if you have)
    And I saw this:

    294990.jpg

1979 German army truck with trailer, it was a monster!
And the best thing: classic car tax.

I would like to see some civilised, well manered people who respect other people's property and understand, that cars are there to be appreciated by looking at them only.

Scantily clad young ladies draping themselves ( carefully) over classic Bavarian machinery.

They would have to wear Lederhosen (or Krachlederne, as they say in Bavaria), though.
