2002 Suzuki problem advice

    I have a 2002 Suzuki Ignis

I was driving home this evening and while stopped at a traffic junction and smelled something burning and noticed in side mirror smoke coming from my exhaust.

This went away when I started driving. There has been an occasional squealing noise in my car for - usually for 1-2 minutes when I start driving. Today it lasted for a 10 minutes including when stopped at junction noticing the smoke/smell and then stopped abrupty and battery light came on. Was on motorway and kept driving. The radio lost power and the lights seemed dimmer to me. Eventually got home stopped, turned off engine and tried to start again but car wont start.

I have no clue about cars - Is this an electric fault mixed with an exhaust issue?

I never have problems with car. It was due a service 10000 km ago.

    Thanks for any help.

Sounds like the alternator belt is in shreds.

This belt turns the alternator which charges the battery.

    Very cheap fix.

The smoke could be any number of things, it may not have been coming from the exhaust and is probably related to the belt.
