Lads, driving Rover 75 diesel at the moment and am going to change. Was definitely going diesel but was wonderingIif it would be feasible to run a subaru legacy 2l? 56 miles round trip daily to work and normal weekend driving. Commute mix of half brutal back roads and half motorway. Any thoughts?

I'm doing that exact commute give or take a few miles longer on the good road. I have an e60 530d which I find great and before that I had a 320d. Only for wanting more power and a downgrade I'd still be in the 3er. Was great, comfortable and I could easily see 50 mpg plus. Parts for servicing are surprisingly cheap.

Sometimes I share the lift with a colleague in a mondeo. He's getting the same mpg as my 530d, if not worse!! But it's a comfy car to be a passenger in.

Just to clarify I mean changing to 2l petrol legacy. Seems to be some coming into bangernomics which is more or less my budget!

More than doubling your fuel costs would have to be considered.

I suppose thats my question. In real terms the rover does ~43mpg or so. Would I get 32/33 mpg from a legacy? Biggest thing is trying to find a clean diesel for bangernomics. Big engined petrols are cheap as chips. 2l 04/05 petrols for same money as a 01 high mileage diesel focus.

Leggys are heavy on juice, even the 2.0 litre, that's one of the reasons they are cheap. Coming from a diesel it will be a real culture shock.

When I went to the 530d, I went way down the years. Not bangernomics territory but not far away either. Im getting 45mpg on my run. Would you consider a big engined diesel? May be cheaper to buy and tax is only about 700 more than a 2l.

On my 60 mile round commute, that's what I'm getting. 85% n road, 15% back road. This is similar to the ops commute. I have the manual mind you yb which is better than the auto. In fairness outside of the commute itself it's more like the low 40's. What's yours giving?

I have the manual too :)

Careful of the brigade around about manual 530d's :)

42mpg calculated best ever, usually 38mpg. If driving it on it's about 34-35mpg!!

    That's a 90% motorway, 10% back Road run.
110 miles a day! Your figures are astonishing!

I'm going off the trip computer... Maybe if I went by properly calculated I'd get a shock but ignorance is bliss!!
