Valentine's Day - Why pink?

I don't celebrate Valentine's day myself, but as I understand it, Valentine's Day is a celebration of romance - something that's obviously relevant to both males and females. Ok, red hearts - nothing wrong with that! However, the only other colour I see predominantly used for Valentine's Day is pink - Why??? To me that colour represents only the female side of things - what about adding in some blue as well so that both genders are fairly represented? Alternatively, why not use just purple (along with the red hearts) - a colour that can also be of romance but not of a particular gender?

Anyone else with any thoughts on this?

But pink is just a funky name for light red...
