keeping living room with door to garden clean

A living room with an external door is not a good idea imo. But if one has one does anyone have ideas to stop dirt coming in . A mat inside door gets dirty easy and has to be washed. Has anyone used a cork mat and could it be washed off with a cloth.Or tried a mat covered with this Or any other ideas?
