Owing tax when you get a P21

I'm going to apply for a health expenses tax credit and ask for a P21 for 2013. Someone in work told me that sometimes you end up having to pay back tax when you ask for a P21. If I end up owing tax, would I be expected to pay it back to Revenue straight away?

    Put your details into http://deloitte.ie/tc/

    And see where you stand.

I hope you're not an accountant, because that is not the question the OP asked, not even the right tax year :D

OP, if you request a P21, Revenue may do a rolling forward-reconciliation from the last time you requested a P21 to the last complete tax year, calculating over or underpayments as they go. What they will not do is base their calculations on a single tax-year, unless of course you've only worked one year in the PAYE system.

OP please disregard my advice to get some sense of where you are with your taxes and take your chances with the tax office.

I'll take your comments on board and stick to the accountancy forum.

Regards to all on the taxation forum.

The advice two posts up is wrong, if you only request a P21 for one year you'll only get one for that year. If you've been in the one job all year there's no reason the tax should be incorrect unless your employer made a hash of it, generally speaking if there is an underpayment of tax it would be collected by reducing your tax credits in future years.

As there's no difference between basic single credits from 2013 to 2014 that Deloitte calculator is fine for getting an idea of what the tax figure on your P60 should look like, to be exact try matching the credits on your 2013 tax credit cert if you have it handy.
