Current grad med student here, just wondering what interns are grossing these days if anyone knew?? I know the official salary is a touch over 30k and payment of overtime can vary with hospital....but another person on the forum said the gross is more like 40-50k.

would love to get an idea so i could formulate some plan to pay off this loan! thanks

€30257 is the salary scale for interns.
Down €5300 since 2008 and with less allowances as well I'm afraid.
Some may be getting €40-50k after overtime but that varies with both hospital and jobs. When on surgical rotation in some hospitals you can be on call 1:3 whilst in certain hospitals medical interns are on call 1:10 or more.

You might be able to pay more back in your intern year, compared to first year SHO, if you've never worked before and so your tax credits help you out for the first half.

thanks for the info so would a 1:3 mean you do 3 days of normal shifts (8 horus day??) and then a 24hr on call shift and then repeat?? how do they break up your days off etc??

what are the less intensive specialities in terms of hours?? im assuming radiology, psych, anything else?

    thanks

1:3 means that there are 3 people covering call. So every 3rd day you're on call or every 2nd day when someone is on leave. Usually those are in hospitals where intern cover is up till midnight or shortly after. So you never do a full 24 hours. However you still rack up a lot of overtime doing it.

Less intensive posts for interns? There are no radiology posts for interns as far as I'm aware and I've never met a psych intern. Maybe it's changed.
The intensity will vary with hospitals. Ortho tends to be very intensive for interns. Some general surgical jobs are really tough and others might be the easiest jobs you can come across. Your best bet is to find out from the current crop of interns.
