Ah not too surprising really, world demographics changing, European numbers continuously slow in relation to Africa and the East.

Their cities growing in size quicker compared to Europes.

Taught it was more like 8 million

Yeah, actually this one is more accurate and puts Dublin at number 360 albeit it's a few years old.

It's not measuring cities by city limits, more like metropolitan areas.

Even then I find it hard to believe that just under 1 in 4 people in the UK lives in the London area.Birmingham must have 1 or 2 million by that ranking, and apparently there are 74 other cities with populations ranging from 100'000 to a million.

The very same website lists the population of Metropolitan London as between 12 and 18 million depending on the definition you use. Most online sources would put it at about 14 million.

It says 1.33 million live in Nottingham
nearly 3 million in Manchester and Birmingham
    1.8 Million in Liverpool
    2.1 Million in Leeds
    1.5 Million in Newcastle

I am going to go out on a limb and say it may not be accurate.

I think if you added up the given populations of all these cities you'd end up with a figure well in excess of the population of the UK. There must be some huge overlaps.

It's probably like here where Meath is included as greater Dublin when there is no sense to it. We wouldnt regard ourselves as living in Dublin, nor would the Dubs want their name tarnished by associating us with them :D .

Statisticians dont really care about these realities though and will just lump us in there as Dublin.

These figures would appear to refer to the "City Region" which is a UK government devised term for specific areas.

Liverpool City Region: 1.5 to 2.3 million (depending on definition used)

    Leeds City Region: 3 million

Tyne and Wear (Newcastle) City Region: 1.65 million

    Greater Manchester: 2.7 million

    Birmingham Metropolitan Area: 3.6 million

They seem to have made a balls of the Nottingham figure alright though.

The term Greater Dublin Area always puts a smile on my face. :) Includes Meath, West Meath, Kildare, Wicklow, Louth, Carlow, Wexford, Loais, Longford, Offaly, Cavan, Monaghan and god knows where else!

Baile Atha Cliath coming in on that list at number 313. Something wrong there unless we have a new Gaelt .... Ghaelt .... One of those places where all the Irish speakers live.

More houses, but footprint friendly ones please, apparently nano-tub material technology will soon allow for buildings of practically any structural height, 10miles? Na bother. I call the entire 777th & 888th floors as a lucky charm.

Presumably nobody from Meath, Kildare or Wicklow was ever consulted when Bord Fáilte gave us the horrendous area title of "Dublin's Doorstep" on their tourism literature.
