I did this course via the long distance learning about 6 years ago.
My background was aero fabrication then manufacturing technology then automation and had worked in places like Intel before I moved to Sligo and since then, medical devices.

I thought this was a logical step and being local I completed the level 7 Mechatronics course.
One aspect I was really looking forward to was Programming as I’d regretted not pursuing it further after my manufacturing tech. cert was completed in Athlone years earlier.
Partly due to the lecturer teaching the Quality Eng. Module I’ve been working in that area since ’08 so my career went off in bit of a tangent however…… the lecturer teaching us programming turned up for maybe 4 if not less lectures throughout the entire year.
He never informed us when or if he was going to turn up, if fact once he arrived late with a sheep trailer on the back of his car muttering about the farm down somewhere ‘round the Mayo/Galway border region and it not been his fault he was late.
He never set us an exam but instead, after we were all still waiting to find out if we had graduated or not, he arranged for us locally based students to meet up in the computer lab (remember long distance course with many students not based in or around Sligo and many living & working abroad).
We were all given the same 2 simple programs printed out, traffic light sequence or such like, which we’d to type into the workstations and pressed run. Congratulations…. Everyone’s passed!!
I’m informed by a number of colleagues who’ve been studying in Sligo over the last couple of years that this guy is now a course coordinator and they’re having similar experiences.
Personally I’d be very tempted to complete further relevant studies but I’m now goosed as regards programming having effectively zero knowledge yet I’ve passed the module.

Many have good experiences with this course but my advice is to be aware that the college seems to tolerate some lecturers that are very much less than effective and keep on top of the course coordinator & all the lecturers.
