Thinking of trading in Octavia VRS

2007 Skoda Octavia VRS 2L Diesel. 200k km on it now. Thinking of getting something a little smaller, with a petrol engine. Not doing the miles that I used to, only about 13k miles a year now.

I saw a same year 2007 1.8 civic for sale online locally. Might have a look at it shortly.

Only me, the mrs, and one child, so don't need such a big car really. It's in and out to work, and shopping on the weekend.

Online reliability index seems to put the civic as streets ahead of the octavia. Tax would be a little less. I'm getting about 44 mpg in the octavia, and it looks like I'd be getting similar in the civic.

I'd be interested to see what they'd offer me as a trade though. I've a niggling issue that's cost me hundreds to diagnose. Could be sticky turbo vanes, could be a sensor. Been planning on keeping the VRS no longer than 2 years, and I've had it about a year and a half already.

    Good move? Any other suggestions?

Yeah, I do love my octavia, but I don't want to drive it forever! My last car I minded and had it from 90k miles up to 240k miles. Just went for a look at the civic, and they said It would be trade in plus 1500. Not overwhelmed by the offer, but i'm only at the early stages of looking.

That price seem to be way out to me is there low kms on the civic. I suppose garages will always look for money when your trading in even if your car is worth the same or more than what your buying. If you want to change for the sake of changing that's Grand but this thing of the car being a bit big makes no sense. There not that big I learn to drive and sat my test in one. The tax is lower on the civic but I couldn't see it doing 44mpg on the shorter trips closer to 40mpg at best. I'd imagine the running cost will be the exact same so there's no financial benefit to changing you'll be down 1500 that would be about it. The reliability index well you have the octavia a year and a half so you should be well able to judge its reliability but they generally never give trouble all I think the newer cr engine is better that the pd. in saying all that the civic is very reliable.

Would it be worth trying to sell the octavia privately the high kms will but a few people off ( I don't consider them high or probably anyone on here just The irish mentality in general I'm talking about). Should still be plenty of interest in it though once it's priced right. At least you could buy straight then.

67k miles on the civic. Thinking over it, I reckon that changing for a car of the same year won't be a great idea. The factored in cost of a warranty on my car being bought, and the one leaving behind is taken away from the value of my car. I think if I expand my budged to 2008 / 2009 would give me a car that would be better value for me over the next couple of years.

Still like the civic though. :-) Maybe just a newer one.

You should throw your Octavia up on donedeal. You'll get a much better price there than from a trade in.

You might even get more for the octy than you'll spend on that civic.

If this weather ever shifts I'll give the car a thorough going over and put up some pics. Come to think of it, I got it valeted a few months back by James on boards here. Those were some shiny photos...

You will never get a great deal trading a car in for a car of similar age unless the car you are buying is not very sellable. Cost to change of €1500 probably covers the warranty on the Civic and possibility of having to prep your Octavia for resale. From their perspective 200k km in your typical Irish buyer's mind is a big stumbling block also.

I think that car could sell well. Advertise it with 120k miles as opposed to 200k km. There is a market for them and a good, clean honest one is getting rare.

My experience is that the VRS doesn't age all that well, small niggly problems can be annoying. I had plenty of them with mine as the miles racked up and decided to offload it as I wasn't impressed. If I was in your position I wouldn't risk the dpf on the PD engines with low miles.

I do indeed, OP, feel free to come have a poke around my Civic if you like, I'm only down the road from you IIRC.

    Chauffe, Marcel, chauffe!

If you're getting 44MPG in the diesel Octavia, I don't think it's realistic to expect the same in the petrol Civic!

I'm skeptical myself. Came across this when I was investigating. From a boardsie. Sure that's gospel. :D

Colm, how do you find your car for fuel? Is it the 1.8?
