Hi, I'am going to Florida on Sunday via Gatwick with Virgin Atlantic and was wondering if I was going through the security checks in Dublin or Gatwick?

Nope. Preclearance is only in Dublin

You will be going through security checks in both airports, however US immigration and customs will be done in Florida on arrival. You only get US immigration and customs pre clearance if you leave from Dublin and terminate the flight in the US. Because your Dublin flight terminates in the UK, there will be no pre clearance for you.

In other words, you may have saved a few quid flying Virgin over one of the many carriers to the US that use Dublin and pre clearence, but be prepared to stand in line for a long time to get through immigration.

Next time, the cheapest isnt always the best!

Not necessarily. Last two times Ive cleared in America I've walked straight through. In Orlando and Philadelphia.

you will clear at the first airport you arrive in in ameica if its not a direct flight you will go through passport control where you hand them passport
customs card and landing card they give you on the plane that you fill out on the
plane, the passport hands you back the customs card, which he writes on in black ink on if your going to be searched, mostly you don't as they have already x rayed your bag and had a drug sniffer dog,
then you wait for your bag they useully have a sniffer dog walk around the carry on luggage while you wait,if he sniffs something your customs card gets marked again for a search, mostly they will just put it on an xray macine
then you walk out and hand the customs card to the agent will mostly tell you have a nice day,95% otherwise he will tell you to go to another line to be searched, which only takes 5 minutes,if florida is not your first stop
you will put your cases on a conveyour belt an airline worker will take them
then you collect them at your final destination, dont put any valubles in your checked luggage,as tsa workers or baggage handlers have been known take stuff

also put your address and email on a piece of paper inside your suitecase 2 times because if the airline tag comes off you will not get your bag back

In my experience it's been a toss-up. You can get stung by circumstances no matter where you clear.

The longest I've had in Dublin I think was about an hour queuing for the old CBP area in T1. There had been some delayed flights and a bunch of them were leaving in a short amount of time.

The longest I've had anywhere was SFO after arriving after a large aircraft with a high number of dark skinned gentlemen with beards who evidently required lots of questioning. I think that was about 90 minutes of waiting before I got to talk to the CBP even though pretty much every lane was in use.

Can be very hit and miss. Went through immigration/ customs in JFK last year after flying from Bogota. A few flights landed around the same time - spent over 3 hours in the queue which was horrific after an over night flight !

Arrived in Atlanta from Costa Rica before Christmas and the queue was only about 20 minutes long - shorter than what would be the norm in Dublin !

I stopped flying to the US through dublin after the last 120 minute queue for pre-clearance in T2. I have flown Virgin landing in O'Hare and had no wait time for clearance.

There has never been a 120 minute queue for CPB in Dublin. There have been delays as the TSA search area but as this is getting expanded the lines there will be a lot shorter.
