Has anyone flown this route before? I've booked it with Virgin Australia - operated by Etihad. During booking, I was only able to pick my seat for the SYD-AUH leg of the trip. The other three legs just came up as unavailable for some reason. I assumed I would be able to pick again after confirming my confirmation, but I cant see anywhere where I can do it. Does anyone know if its possible?

Also, what is Etihad/AUH like? I've heard mixed things about both.

Edited to say that I found a way to pick my seats. Still interested in hearing peoples experiences with the airline though!

I've flew DUB-AUH-SYD with Etihad just after Christmas. There was a lot of messing around due to the weather but they handled it really well IMHO. There wasn't a lot they could do, but they worked hard to minimise the hassle.

Thanks to the weather I spent about 15-20 minutes in AUH since they had held the AUH-SYD flight to allow the delayed DUB-AUH passengers to make the connection. I'm flying SYD-AUH-DUB in a few days so I'll let you know what AUH is like when I get home! :)

Great stuff. Looking forward to hearing about it!

After picking my seats, they now appear to be confirmed and I think one of my choices was different to what I picked. Nevertheless, I have an aisle seat on all 4 flights...although according to seat guru (or a website similar) 3 of those 4 are heavy traffic seats and narrower compared to the other seats.

Home now, trying to warm up. So cold after coming from SYD.

AUH is OK as a transit airport. I had to reclear security but it was pretty quick and cursory (laptop stayed in the bag and they didn't check the STEB that the wine I got in SYD duty free was in). There's some food stuff which I didn't look at, there's the usual duty free stuff and then that's about it really. I had about 2.5 hours in the airport and I think I saw about as much as I did when I spent 15 minutes running through it on my way out to Australia. :)

Right, now to clean up and head off to work! :D

Thanks for that! My stopover is only 2 hours or so too so not too bothered about that. What was the flight like? I've heard that their seats and aisles are narrower then standard airlines?

It's not that uncommon to do 10 abreast in economy in a 777 and SeatGuru have them listed as a 17.5" width which isn't unusually small.
