Do you think technological advances are sometimes a bad thing?

For instance, 10 years ago, a 30 inch standard definition TV would be great, some would even view it as a large TV. Then a 15 inch TV would be grand for the kitchen/bedroom/ect if you required a TV there. In this day and age. a 30 inch TV in the living room would be considered very small. And even if you were to have one in the kitchen it would be considered average sized. And even then, when it comes to high definition, we all got by perfectly grand without high definition, it's only now that it exists that we need it.

    Do you? 13 votes

Give me a few days to write my response on a pece of paper, tie it to my pigeon's leg and hope he doesn't get lost on his way to you :pac:

In all honesty, I think they're great.

OP there is a difference between a need and a want. You need water, food, clothing. But you want a 30 inch HD TV. You choose to have the HD TV. Technological advances have resulted in MRI scanners saving lives.

You dont need a 42 inch TV. You choose to have one.

Of course, technological advancements do lead to some great things. Hell, without technological advancement, we'd be left in the wild, only able to eat what we can find or kill with our bare hands. Hence the reason the question is sometimes, there's no doubt, technological advancement as a whole is not a bad thing at all, it is truly incredible to look at the amount we've advanced as a species in even the last decade.

I'm supposed to use iPads next year for school and I think it's great. Technology can only get better which I think is always a good thing.

In 80ish years we went from single firing muskets to Nuclear tipped ICBMs. It is a staggering revolution in a lifetime. Technology is a double edged sword. Even the production of Nuclear weapons can be used an example, advances in this field gave us modern rocketry which kicked off the Space age and the age of mass communications. Overall I think as long as technology is moderated and controlled in some way then it is a great thing but otherwise it can be incredibly dangerous.

I'm generally a luddite (still have a Nokia for example) but HD is amazing. Watching Frozen Planet on a HD TV is like having a polar bear just outside your window

Yeah, I'm posting this from my new bluetooth keyboard because I am too lazy to lean off my recliner to type on the laptop keyboard. I will now in all likelihood get fat and die. :(

I have to be convinced of technologies uses, I was very reluctant to get a smart phone util my previous phone (a Nokia ;) ) gave up. Even after 6 months with this smart phone (another Nokia) I could easily give it up. My philosophy is something like the following "sure what would I want that for" haha

Things are moving too fast now - hard to keep up. But that's not a huge complaint - I still like technological advances. It would be nice IMO if things went a bit slower though. :)

With its high excess and low cover (€500 if I recall)

It's many things, great is not one adjective I would use though

Ya but its an added expense. And you cant do your work till you get a replacement.
And whats with the rolleyes? Chill man!
I was wondering, can these school tablets be prevented from having games on them?
Because if i know kids today they will be fecking about with angry birds or some other rubbish while they should be learning. They're great and all but open up a whole other can of worms.

Your school bag could get pretty heavy carrying those iPads. I reckon you'll get away with just the one which should cover all your subjects.;)

My school charges €25 per year and this covers any sort of damage, theft, water damage etc. You pay a €50 exculess though.

They install an MNO (Think thats what it's called) which is basically like a script and so long as you're on the school WiFi they can monitor you. It's your tablet though so it's yours to do as you please. The 1st years in my school just play games during break on them :P

The electricity went out for about two hours earlier and I actually had to interact with real people to pass the time.

A microcosm of how much technology dominates your life without even realising it (until it's temporarily gone).

No, I think they're OK so long as they don't take over our lives.

Technology makes life easier for the most part. Think back years ago where things had to to applied for in writing, or bills paid in the bank, with queuing up, or the post office, wasting your lunch break doing stuff you can now just pull out your phone and do in a few seconds.

Sure my school books were full of flip cartoons I drew instead of paying attention, kids will always have something to distract them from learning in a class
