Should this be covered in a warranty?

So i bought a car from a garage in the north Dublin area and had a few problems with it
    1. the passenger window went down but wouldn't come back up
    2. only half of the dash lit up
    3. and the indicators wouldn't turn off after completing my turn.
So i rang the garage and arranged a time and date to get it back to them to fix the faults, but when i went back to colect the car they had only replaced the bulbs in the dash and fixed the window but not the indicators. They said that that would be something i would have to do myself.

What i am asking is this legal, in my warranty it doesn't go into specifics on what is and isn't included.

This is also a few more problems i have had with this garage since i bought the car one month ago.

When i first bought the car they gave it to me with just enough petrol to get to the petrol station down the road. And when i dropped the car into be fixed they arranged a loner car for me for the 2 days they would have mine witch once again had just enough fuel to go the road to fill up, the passenger door didn't lock, and it had no rear view mirror. Then to top it all off when i left the car with them it had a 1/4 of a tank of petrol and when they gave it back to me it was almost empty.

Loaner cars typically have little to no fuel in them. People only put in as much as is needed. Do you have the warranty on paper? If it's a second hand car 5+ years old, its typically 3-6 months gearbox/engine only, anything else looked after is generally good will.

it is a 8 year old car so yea 3 months warranty, and that seems fare enough.

Only problem i had with them was the car was sold to me with that problem and had not been declared when i was buying it.

And sorry for posting the name, i should have asked first.

I may be wrong but I think on the meganes you need to replace the whole steering column to fix that problem.

Used to work in a dealership and I know we used to regularly take home customer cars as our cars belonging to the garage were given to customers whilst their own car was left in for work to be done.

By entire column you mean just the column mounted switch gear (left side stalk and right side stalk)

£175 for an Original part on e-bay UK but you could try get one in a scrap yard for a heck of a lot less.

How come you didn't notice this when you test drove the car?

Garages have trade insurance so their staff have full insurance to drive any car.

For personal use? What about the fuel usage and the issue of owner's permission?

OP, how long after purchase did these failures occur?

the indicator turns off when it is indicating right but not left and i only drove it out the garage gate down to the roundabout and back. in hindsight i really should have taken it for a much longer drive.

that would be my point as well, what about the 1/4 tank of petrol they used on me, and before someone says "it is only a 1/4 tank of fuel" a 1/4 tank of fuel in this car is about €20-€25 and that is €20-€25 i cant afford to just give away.

and the indicators i noticed about a hour after i got it (kept saying i musnt have turned the wheel enough) and the window wasn't till about 5 days after.(Irelands ****y weather never needed to open it, was always raining).
the lights about 2 days after i got it( hadnt drove at night tilll then).

I would assume the insurance covers them. I know the last time my car went into my local garage with a problem that it cut out and restart the garage got the car going but the service manager rang me to ask could one of the lads bring it home as he lived a good bit away and they could make sure the car wasn't showing any faults.

I agreed as I wanted to make sure they had it right. I collected it the next day car was running perfect and fixed and they did me a good deal on the cost. There was about 150 km on the clock and the fuel gauge was down a bit but as I said they asked me and I personally wouldn't get upset over a tenner of diesel as the car was fixed. If they had taken it without asking me could they maybe I'd feel different. But for some problems which only happen when the car is driven long distance or randomly then the mechanic needs to take it on a good test drive and you could argue then that they are diagnosing a fault which the trade insurance would cover.

the faults i had, had nothing to do with the engine so there would be no reason for them to take it on a drive. i am not the best person when it comes to confrontation and felt that i was in the right to ask what had happened to the petrol but after having the conversation the day before about the loner car they had given me that had more faults then the car gave them to fix and was unsafe (in my opinion) to drive and was told it was that car or nothing i didn't think that i would get anywhere.

Anyway op the window not going back up is probably a window regulator which is one of the most common problems of that model megane.

The dash light which ones are blown the ones on the heaters or the ones on the actual clocks ie the fuel guage speedo etc. we've owned a few of them meganes and the bulbs at the heater seem to have a tendancy to blow although it normally only one or two bulbs I've never seen them all blow so I mean the heater controls would still be partly light up. Even on a 04 megane we had with 150k miles on it there was only two bulbs blown on the heater. On a 07 we had I remember driving it a few times at night and the clock (speedo all gauges) lights would go out for a split second and then come back on as normal seemed a bit weird the car only done it a few times.

The third problem I've never seen it happen so can't be of much help there.

Edit: just after seen your above post you are right they should have asked could they take the car. As for the loaner car garages tend to give you anything that is in the yard they won't tend to be in top condition in some cases. Although it is only temporary also as said above they never have fuel in the cars they give out.

When buying something you make sure everything works. Especially a modern car with so much electronics. Check everything before you leave the grounds. If the garage makes a fuss about this, walk away.

Sure. I bet I could sell tickets and popcorn.

Bottom line don't trust anything a garage tells, you, double check everything.
