Looking for help with Arabic

    Hi there,
I'm looking to get in touch with an Arabic speaker who could help me with my Syrian Refugee documentary project. I'm traveling to Harmanli in Bulgaria in 2 weeks where there are 1,700 Syrians locked in a refugee compound. I will be making a documentary when I am there about the situation, and to highlight the fact that Ireland are shamefully only taking in 90 more refugees.
I don't speak Arabic though, so before I go I need to prepare some interview questions in Arabic to ask the people on the ground. I'm wondering would this group have a volunteer that could help me with this?
I'm self funding the film and have asked my friends and family to help me cover costs so far, so I can't pay for the translation, but I will need help translating the video footage when I return in March and would be able to pay a small fee for that.
If you know anyone who is interested in this situation and would be willing to help, please get in touch with me, it is quite urgent at this point: info on project: http://fundit.ie/project/harmanli-on-the-fringe-of-freedom
    Thank you!
    Niamh

PS. Apologies if this is in the wrong forum, I will remove if it is!

    Hi Niamh,

If you contact Dr. Ali Salem, who is an arabic lecturer in trinity college and is also a senior member of the Islamic Cultural Centre of Ireland. He is really good and very obliging.

    Thanks,
    Michael

Sounds like a great undertaking, wish you the best of luck with it.

If you've got a smartphone, you could try using Google Translate. It can work offline once you've downloaded the Arabic language pack, so you won't need an internet connection out there. If somebody speaks Arabic into it, it will translate it into English text for you. And if you speak English into it, it will translate it into Arabic text for them to read. Although I think the offline feature is restricted to Android phones/tablets only (you could pick one up for around 50 quid if you don't have one). You'll need internet access to get the full feature of saying something in English into it and it then plays out loud translated Arabic audio. I don't know how practical that would be if you are making a documentary, but it might be of some use to you!

I also know some Irish-Syrians and other Arabic speakers who will probably be happy to translate stuff over the phone for you, if that'd be any help.
