The question is should i upgrade my processor ??

    I have a Intel i7-920 http://ark.intel.com/products/37147
It came with pc i bought years ago.

I dont intend on using the machine as a gaming pc just for watching videos listening to music internet etc.

The only thing i noticed about using this in a new machine would be finding a motherboard thats not seriously expensive.

I'd say an SSD is a better investment if you don't have one already. That processor is plenty for what you're doing.

Ya thats what i taught its just the motherboard issue i was unsure over. I mean if i wanted to buy a new motherboard do they support this older version of the i7 without me having to spend crazy money im talking 150 euro plus.

You want to buy a new motherboard and use your old cpu? Why not just use the old motherboard? A new motherboard with the same cpu won't improve your performance.

Ya true i guess. I dunno i have been looking at prices of building a new machine for a while now but its not essential. I wouldnt need a sound card as only bought new one last year would like the idea of upgrading to ssd and really i dont play games on the pc only watch videos and listen to music.

I take it selling the version of the i7 i have now wouldnt be worth it right?

You aren't doing anything stressful and you have a quad core octo thread 3ghz cpu.

You could do far more intensive work on this despite its age. No you don't need to do anything.

Add an ssd and you're sorted.

Might just do that !. I was thinking of just making some small upgrades and keeping what i have.

You processor should be plenty strong enough for music and videos. Are you having any particular problems with your current pc? Sluggish behavior when it used to be faster?

If you don't have any performance issues but you want to spend a bit to make it snappier to boot and launch apps, go with the ssd. Or upgrade your broadband / wifi if your download speeds aren't great.

No real problems every once in a while it seems to run under bit of pressure but its mostly fine. Only issues ive ever had were graphical odd time screen goes off and gets an error i aint using the original card i am using slightly better one that used be in my brothers machine.

The broadband is over 100 mbs so theres no issue with that.

Actually here are my current specs.

    CPU
    Intel Core i7 920 @ 2.67GHz
    Bloomfield 45nm Technology

    RAM
    6.00GB Triple-Channel DDR3 @ 534MHz

    Motherboard
ASUSTeK Computer INC. P6T DELUXE (LGA1366)

    Graphics
1023MB NVIDIA GeForce GTX 550 Ti

    Optical Drives
    HL-DT-ST DVD-RAM GH22NP20 ATA Device

    Audio
    ASUS Xonar D2X Audio Device

How is your pc connected to the router? Have you tried doing a speedtest?

Looks good to me. Grab whatever size SSD you want, throw Windows on it, and you're done. There's nothing else worth (or in need) of and upgrade in that machine.

Samsung Evo is usually the best bet, or a Crucial M500. They tend to be around the same €/GB range, though the Samsungs are slightly bigger in terms of capacity.

If you check the bargain alerts thread on the main forum page there is an offer on Crucial M500 128GB at the moment(£46) if you order direct from crucial and use parcel motel i think. Thats some fantastic value:)
