Northern Ireland becoming a sovereign state

Why is there so little debate on the future possibilty of Northern Ireland becoming a sovereign state?

I am hearing more and more Northern Irish people describing themselves as Northern Irish as opposed to being Irish or British. This is very hearting to hear as it is breeding new ground of equality and not division.

A new soverign state with a new flag and maybe a new name even could be the solution to sustained long term peace. The fact of the matter is this solution could rid all the division that currently exists between the two communicties. They would now all be in the same boat and would have to work together to ensure their country becomes self-sufficient.

    Discuss please

I wouldn't be against it myself, although you can't expect people to start celebrating a new culture and have a new identity just so that they will get on with their neighbours better, people being secure with their identity is very important for peace in the future. I actually don't know many nationalist people who would call themselves northern irish to be fair and i'm in my early 20's, i prefer Ulsterman.

Hibernia would be a good name for the state, the ROI had no problem with calling their state Ireland so why shouldn't we use the latin version or something

I think there has been in the past and it does have some support, but it's quite limited. Whether it's limited because people don't like the idea or because of the elephant in the middle of the room (i.e. an independent sovereign NI is essentially not economically, and arguably socially, viable), is another matter.

I worked on a consultancy gig, alongside someone from NI (Catholic, but from a mixed marriage) who supported this option, back in 2005. Her take of it was that NI should be an independent sovereign state, but that either Dublin or London should continue to foot the bill for the current subvention.

Yeah, I thought. That's going to happen...

I was about to call that a silly idea, then I realized that the Swiss did exactly that (name their country 'Confoederatio Helvetica' in Latin) so to avoid favouring any of the national language groups.

I really don't see how my considering myself Irish (and having an Irish passport) could be viewed as "divisive". I have absolutely no problem with my neighbour seeing himself as British or Northern Irish, and respect him enough to call him whatever he wishes.

On the other hand, being forced to adopt an identity with which I have no affinity and in which I have no interest would annoy me.

As for a sovereign Northern Ireland - a novel idea but, I suspect, unworkable in practice.

NI has never been able to function as a democracy without the intervention of either the British or the British and ROI.

Now, sure, I'm not 100% that we've got the hang of that whole democracy thing in the ROI either - is that like where we have a vote and then continue having one until we get the result we want?

Who we elect and what they do has nothing to do with it. Everyone who is eligible has a vote here. We don't require intervention to administer democracy and equality. NI did and still does require that intervention. It cannot govern itself.

Sorry, you misunderstood me. I should have added a winking smiley.
