Thinking of importing from Japan

I am looking to buy a twin cam and was looking into importing from Japan. It seems that I would save a lot of money. Has anyone had any experience in importing?

Thanks for a great link biko.

I would still like some feedback though.

Is it still worth while compared to buying in Ireland? How long can it take to get VRT and plates? Is insurance and tax high?

Im not an expert in this, but in my opinion it is worth it in so far as you stand a better chance of finding a good clean example of what you want by importing as opposed to fishing around the Irish market and hoping to find one that hasnt been modified within an inch of its life and/or had the absolute rag driven out of it.

Tax is tax; it depends on what car you are getting.

Insurance is going to be difficult. Irish insurers do not like Japanese imports; low car theft in Japan means JDM imports tend to have little/no security when imported which doesnt go well with the fact that they tend to be a target for theft over here, and also many JDM cars in Ireland (certainly the performance models) have a bad reputation with insurers brought about by the high number of claims against them. I have a JDM Integra, and its a yearly struggle to find insurance quotes. Last year was a bit easier (I turned 30 so I think that helped), but expect 90% of insurers to say no immediately.

Don't bother unless you're looking for something not available in Europe.

You save nothing in reality. Here are your expenses in a nutshell. I'll be gentle:

    Car
    Customs
    Loading/docking fees
    Shipping
    VRT
    VAT on all above.
    Required maintenance (Tyres, service, belts).
    Tax/Insurance

Take a car you're looking at in japan and triple the yen. That is the average you'll pay if you're lucky.

Just wondering did you go ahead and import a twin cam? Seems to be renewed interest in the jap cars.
