A light flashing saying stop came up on my dash this morning with a symbol of a battery underneath it. I suspect I may require an new battery. I have ordered one online but it will probably be next week before it arrives. Would it be OK to continue driving with this light on.

It doesn't have to be the battery, for instance this light can also come on if the alternator is not working right.
But if the car starts up I'd drive it.. you may get stranded somewhere though, just fyi.

Good chance your battery is fine and your alternator is bust. Ask someone with a multimeter to check if you are getting approx 14 volts across the battery when the engine is running. If your alternator is broken the car will continue to run until the battery goes flat. Not long.

Left my car into my mechanic yesterday evening. He has informed me this morning that it is in fact the alternator which is causing the problem.
