I got kerosene today from a local supplier and as the tank was empty when i went to bleed it i notices it was clear not red. On checking the tank i drained some of it off and it was a very pale orange almost clear colour. I phoned them straight up and was told oh its fine and wont harm your boiler.

Can this harm my boiler? My thinking is its imported from the north and I'm presuming this is illegal.

    NI fuel.
What area do you live in kris ?
And how close are you oil distributors to the border + do they also operate up there ?

I'm not sure about the legality of NI fuel here but I'm sure one of the guys here will reply soon.

I'm in Cork so its all red down here.

Thanks that was my guess too. I live on Cavan/Meath border so about 1hr from the North.

Suppose kerosene is kerosene but i was surprised the supplier was not fussed when I questioned them.

Could be water in bottom of your tank. Water can build up through condensation in tank or if there was any weather cracks on tank it can seep in with rain.

I'm not very clued up on it but my guess would be it'd have to be an awful lot of water to turn 300ltrs??? In which case wouldn't that wreck the boiler?

we have ways to check for water contamination

but if your concerned just draw off a small qty and leave standing in a clear container water will sink to the bottom and will be clearly visible as you will have a two tone mix in the jar

It's not water. Water can't burn.

It sounds as if it's fuel from the north alright, but can't see how it would be legal for a distributor to see it south of the boarder!
