Vernon Tap is Galway Bay's new amber ale. So that's me in the door, then.

In fairness there are a few around. The other Galway Bay do, IIRC, as does 57 The Headline.

    In the Conrad Hotel.

I wonder what's on the other two vernon taps at the far right (probably specials from other breweries?

Either way a visit must be had, the bar looks great. having never been in there what's the seating arrangements like and is there enough of it?

As does Abbot's and Bierhaus in Cork.

The barman in the Salthouse told me that my Of Foam and Fury glass was 33cl.

    33cl is not 2/3 of a pint.

    Pint = 568ml.

2/3 pint = 379ml, which is what is advertised.

He told me the glass was 33cl, though it was not marked as such, as far as I could see.

The style of glass they normally use is this, afaik.

These are 12.5oz when full, which is 370ml.

It's quite a sizeable bar - much bigger than their other three city centre venues. Big long bar plonked in the middle of the floor that you can walk around.
Their table tennis table will take up quite a bit of room though.

    Does it have a T.V.?

  • Moderators, Recreation & Hobbies Moderators Posts: 11,975 Mod ✭✭✭✭BeerNut

    I didn't see one. But
We will be showing the Arsenal v Man Utd game this eve on our giant screen
    so it must do.

Popped in tonight for my first visit.

Got the impression that The Conrad courted Galway Bay to add value to the hotel rather than the other way round.

It's an interesting combination. I wouldn't normally put a hotel in that category with a craft brew pub. You'd kinda expect a fancy cocktail bar instead.
Not that I'm complaining, I think it's a bold move and one to be welcomed. Alfie Byrne's had been deserted for years, despite its location.

Beer + Ping Pong = a winning combination!

5* hotels and fancy Cocktail bars are ten a penny though.

Interesting diversification from the Conrad - can't think of another hotel with a craft brew pub. Can't help but think it'd be better suited to a more boutique style hotel though; the Conrad is fairly gigantic and the patrons would be more business travellers I'd imagine. Then again craft beers are the new whiskey and fine wine in the younger members of that demographic.

Watched the Six Nations there yesterday. Is nice to have somewhere to head to watch a bit of sport and not have to choose Tiger or Stella as your exotic alternative to Heineken, as most of the craft beer places avoid having a screen of any sort. I know it's nice to not have football blaring and people shouting at it in places but a bit of a mix is good too. You can like craft beer AND sporting events, listening to some people you'd swear they were mutually exclusive interests.

I liked the place. The three staff that were on while I was there were great, two girls and a lad. Crazy busy once the Ireland game got going but still polite and on the ball at all times. Decent selection of beers. All the Galway Bay stuff as well as another 9 keg taps with a variety of stuff, including one or two things I hadn't seen anywhere before, and a cask pump that was doing Dark Cascadian. The girl told me they six pumps are rotational as well as the cask so should be something different in fairly frequently.

The stools are a nightmare. Like some sort of malicious torture they've decided to inflict on people for some kind of sick joke. Never sat in anything so uncomfortable. They did have a limited amount of better looking seating. Though the screen didn't seem to be too visible from it. Screen to seat placement in general isn't very well thought out. I'd leave them feedback about it on twitter but they don't interact with their account properly at all. Post things up but don't respond to anyone. Which is pretty stupid, may as well not have it. Had the steak sandwich, was one of the better steak sandwiches I've had but would want to be for 16 euro, rest of the menu was fairly bland and similarly over priced, but I suppose that's to be expected of a bar in the Conrad.

Good points, a craft beer pub with a good selection of beers, reasonably priced, and good staff where you can watch a bit of sport.

Bad points, food is grand but overpriced and not a great selection, those weird torture stools, and general poor seating arrangement. No free WiFi either unless your a gold member guest in the hotel, which was irritating, as its impossible to pick up a 3g signal in there.

Hmm, it has potential but could make improvements, but they'll never know, as they won't respond to their social media accounts.

There's wifi there alright, you just ask the bar for the code! No need for any membership to anything.
