    Hi all,

I am planing on building a manure pile to store straw bedding for about a year until it rots and can be spread, this will only be a small scale job but do I

#1 : Need to roof it?
#2: have a run off pipe?

My plan is to build it an existing corner of the yard and put a concrete lip on it to prevent dirty water running away from it

It will only be bedding from sheep sheds in it so it will be relatively clean, I heard that sheep farmers don't need to roof their manure piles is this true?

AFAIK you don't need to roof it, but the run off needs to be collected in a suitably sized collection tank so as not to cause pollution by entering drains or streams etc.

If it was roofed there wouldn't be a pile of run off but id assume you'll still need to collect any potential run off.
With out roo you'll have to have enough to catch run off, bearing in mind that will include rain that will fall on tht area over the closed period.

You would probably get away with a precast tank from any of the concrete suppliers as it wont need to be that big.

Iirc, if you cover it with a silage cover it doesn't need a tank.
