I have a Skype interview coming up on Thursday. My question is, what would people's opinion be on wearing a suit and tie for that? If the interview was a "live" interview, it would be the sort of meeting I would wear a suit to, but this who Skype thing has me questioning.

In my mind, a company who conducts Skype interviews is a little less formal, so maybe a shirt and tie might send the wrong message!!

    What do you all think?

would definately dress either in casual smart or very smart casual, meaning at least a dress shirt and prob a tie, your lower half you can wear Jeans as they wont see it, just because they are doing a skype interview doesnt mean they are any less formal.

always a suit and try and do it at a desk.

I interviewed a guy a couple of weeks ago for a pretty senior job, he was on his bed... in a T shirt.... and probably no pants.. and i'm 100% serious..

Treat it like any other interview - except that you need to prepare the background and ambient lighting, and make sure you have no interruptions. If you can, test out your cliothing and backgroud with a friend beforehand (get them to take a few screenshots).

Not necessarily less formal at all. Most of my work these days is done via phone conferencing, so an interview process that test phone skills would make a lot of sense.

Depends on the industry/ company you are interviewing for. If it is insurance or banking or whatever where everyone wears a shirt and tie you should do the same.

But if the industry is a bit less formal like tech then I would just go smart casual with a jumper and shirt or something along those lines.

Yup!!! I'm actually kinda nervous about that!! I'm turning off every other wi-fi device that uses the router, and I'll be rebooting well before the interview.

Any Skype interview I did was without video. It is just the phone service people use. Are you sure they expect video?

We do first round interviews without video, next round with video. Everywhere would be different. Unless they are a very formal company then a shirt should be ok. We use the first round to weed out the CV bullsh-ters, which 80% of the time they are.

I had an interview with a Chinese company last month. It was 5 am in the morning and I was in my dressing gown and hadn't even shaved. I was still eating my breakfast and drinking my tea ha ha

suffice to say, i didnt get the job

Thanks for the replies everyone. I was told it to make sure my camera and mic are working, so I am working on the assumption that it will be a video call.

Going to go with the shirt and tie.

    Thanks all.
