If a BB is unloaded by chain and just holding the chainset amd pedals, how much should it turn? If I spin it, should it keep spinning awhile or just turn once or twice?

It very much depends on the type of bottom bracket and the bearings installed.

For example a square taper with loose ball bearings can spin 5-10 times, no problem. A BB30 BB with high quality bearings, like this one will only spin once or twice at most.

New ones tend to be fairly greased up so can be a little sticky. Nothing to worry about. When I replaced the bb, the old one span really freely in my hands whereas the new one was a bit "sticky" when it was spun in my hand. It's just because it's packed with grease. Under load is when the opposite is true and the old knackered one will offer more resistance. Mine was a square taper by the way.

That's perfect guys thanks. It's a BB30 so it makes sense. Replacing parts so figured I'd do it now if needed.

    BB30 can be draggy.

If you replace the bearings, make sure you get a top quality set. You can get them in an engineering shop. Bike shops only sell rubbish BB30 bearings, waste of money.

yeah.Go to Dickinsons in Finglas just under the M50 and bring your old bearings with ya. Ask them if they can match them with the best they have ( will be cheaper then you think). I changed the bearings in my Khamsins for a set from here and transformed the wheels. €5 a side (I know they are wheel bearings I am on about but just making a point)

I think I'll leave the BB for the moment, but this makes snes for the Corima disk and four spoke which need new bearings.
