Wierd R4 problem.

I recently got an R4 for my DS XL (v1.4.5E) and the R4 SDHC Dual-Core 2014.

When I put the kernel on the card, the r4 software works perfectly initially, but as soon as I open a Rom, the Rom runs OK, but once I exit, the software acts crazy the next time I turn on the DS, keeps randomly going into random menus, crashing, as if it has a life of its own like certain buttons are being held down. The wierd thing is that if I manage to get into a Rom, then the game works normally. It's just the R4 software that acts wierd. Sometimes, it'll load, go straight to the moonshell menu by itself, which then promptly crashes with a message saying something about a memory extension not found.

I've tried different kernels and SD cards, same on all. It's not really usable as it's a battle trying to get into any rom without it crashing and the keys flying all over the place like someone is holding the keys down. edit: now it automatically goes straight to 'multimedia' in the software menu as if a user is selecting it, proceeds to give an error message saying 'memory extension not found', and brings me to this strange screen with tabs for accessory and application, with a blue R4 screen on the top screen. under application it just lists a random rom, is different every time.

Any ideas what it could be? Faulty card or what? (out of the box card did not work at all, have to use a piece of paper to push the board out to make contact so the DS picks it up) Can't find anyone with the same problem on all of the web....

You have a least one uneven leveled gold connector pin in DSi game slot. The paper would pushing the card forward to make contact with the pins. I posted a video on youtube about 2 years on how to fix that. Basically open the back of the DSi until you see the game slot. On top of the slot is a hatch, press the hatch down and look at the pins. identify the uneven pin and use a pin or tweezers to adjust the gold pin(s).

Could you post a screenshot of the Kernel files installed/layout on the MicroSD without .nds files or .sav files.

Since I pushed the folded paper into the R4 card, it's picked up perfectly (as bomberman land). But using the latest kernel for the card (2014 R4 SDHC Dual Core), when I load the card, once it boots into the software menu, it keeps automatically scrolling to the 'multimedia' option as if someone was controlling it, at which point it crashes. No way around it, and renders it entirely unusable. If I hold the Dpad to the left while it boots, and hit A while holding left, I can get into the Rom list, at which point the Roms load normally enough, and once I load a rom, the gameplay is perfect - the whole 'random ghost controlling' is only in the software main menu.

    Will update with screencaps.

There are only to things I can think of the would make the controls go nuts. Corrupt firmware affecting the R4 controls script or a sticky button on the console.

If you can avail of another DS for 2 minutes to test if the R4 works normally in that console, you could eliminate the corrupt firmware as the cause.

If the buttons B or X sticking the R4 rom list jumps up and down through selections.
If the button Y is sticking it jumps to moonshl2 multimedia option

The buttons aren't sticking though, because once it loads a rom, the game works 100%, and when playing a regular DS cart, the controls are perfect, they only go bonkers in the r4 card menu.

Using it now in a 2DS and the button issue is gone, but every now and again after playing a rom, the next time I boot the card, I get a white screen with a message on the stop screen stating 'error'.

Right that sound like a firmware issue. You mention you were trying different kernels but did you completely remove all files and folders from the root of the mircoSD before putting a new kernel on.

From the original kernel there should be 3 folders and 1 file.

    • Moonmemo (folder)
    • Moonshl2 (folder)
    • R4iMenu (folder)
    • R4.dat (file)

When placed into the DS consoles with the white R4i SDHC Dual Core 2014 these generate 2 system files that is dumped in between the roms.
    • Demon0.sys
    • SWRESET.sys

They can be viewed by taking the microSD out connecting it to a pc via the microSD USB pen. Check for duplicate files or files that are not listed above or even just remove all files and folders and reinstall.

How to setup new 2014 R4i SDHC Dual core

    Step: 1 download the kernel
Download the latest kernel form the official :
    http://www.r4isdhc.com/2014-r4isdhc-dual-core/

Step: 2 copy the kernel to micro SD card.

unpack the zip file with WinRaR or 7zip and you will get theses files:
    • Moonmemo (folder)
    • Moonshl2 (folder)
    • R4iMenu (folder)
    • R4.dat (file)
copy them all to the root of micro sd card.
