Volume mismatch

I've spotted a problem when I play mp4 videos on my mac. With the default QuickTime programme, I can't hear the video very well, even at max volume. If I play it through VLC player (I'm not a huge fan of that) I can play it at a much louder volume.

Is there some reason why the default programmes on the mac don't play at a higher volume? Better still is there a way to change the default volume in QuickTime? Thanks !

VLC can boost the volume up to 200% of normal, so that may be a factor...
