Vast amount in "other" on my mac.

So i did a quick check to see how much space i'd left on my MBP drive and found over 150gb in the "other" section.

So i ran omnidisksweeper and got a bit of a better idea, and cleared out some stuff (old iphone backups, old mail folders, sleepfile etc etc) but that only got me about 10gb back....

Any way to get some space back without having to do a fresh install?

What do you mean by other section? Can you list the name/location?

Download GrandPerspective - gives you a good visual representation of what files are clogging up space on your mac.

    What the professor said.....

After reading that, the only thing i think it could be are my logic files. I'll backup/delete a few of those and see where that gets me.

Interestingly (well, to me it is :) ) the graph for my iMac shows 178 GB of Other and just 7.2GB of photos. However the actual size of the Aperture Library is almost 80GB !! So this graph isn't really accurate at all as it doesn't look inside libraries.

It also counts VHDs used in VirtualBox - which accounts for most of the other 98GB or so - as "Other" on my drive.

I discovered that my "other" was due to me not performing a backup.

The system automatically takes a snapshot of your disk and saves them

If you turn off Timemachine it should all vanish and be back as normal.

You can also turn this off with terminal and then backup as you need
