Samsung Smart TV not finding any channels

We have cable TV with UPC (stb3 id60 g6 set top box) and recently bought a Samsung Smart TV, but the TV is not able to find any channels during auto tuning.

The set top box is connected to the TV via a Scart cable to a Scart-to-Ext (RGB) cable that goes into the TV.

We get the TV channels alright but because auto tuning doesn't work we are missing the Smart TV functions.

What can we do to make it work as it should?

Can you use a HDMI cable to connect the set top box to the TV?

The set top box only has Scart sockets. I could try to connect it via a Scart to HDMI cable if that is the solution but I don't have such a cable handy at the moment.

The TV's own tuner(s) won't find any channels, as there is no source connected to its RF input(s).

Which 'smart' functions are you concerned about?

The UPC functions are from the UPC box itself so AFAIK, their will be no SMART functions provided by your TV for that signal.

I've just been on to Samsung. I need an HDMI connection to get TV On functionality but the set top box from UPC doesn't support HDMI, and UPC don't supply any other set top boxes in my area (no HDTV in 2014, seriously?), so it looks like there's nothing I can do but wait for progress to catch up.

On TV? What reason did they give for needing a HDMI connection? How can the TV's internet-based functions interact with the UPC box?

I think there is a bit of confusion here, the SMART functions have nothing to do with the UPC signal an won't interact with them at all. I imagine what you need to do is hook the TV up to your UPC broadband (wirelessly or direct, not sure of your TV connections presume it is wireless though)

The TV itself would have the ability to receive a few free-to-air HD services. How many will depend on the tuners it has on board & of course, it would need to be connected to an aerial &/or satellite dish.

The way I understood it is that Scart can't transfer the information needed for the following:

On TV is where you can seamlessly view and access live TV shows and movies. You can also see what’s coming up next without missing what you’re currently watching

The four other Smart functions work fine.

Is that what you are talking about?

If so, that will not work on your UPC shows as they are streamed through your UPC box, even if you had the Horizon box and used HDMI, it is still not workable with the SMART onTV features.

That said what you have said, sounds suspiciously like the Horizon set top box TV advert from memory, is it possible you have mixed the two of them up?

No, I'm talking about the one of the 5 screens you get when pressing the Smart TV button on the remote.

You can see it right at the start of this video:

Is there any way of getting this to work at all then?

Judging by the connection in the top corner of the youtube video, it looks like it is just taking in a Saorview/freeview signal from a regular aerial. If you have that you could try it first but if it works, it will only be for the channels you get direct, not through UPC. From here though:
    http://www.samsung.com/us/2013-smart-tv/#smart-tv-2

It looks like you need your internet connection on for it to work as well, won't come through the HDMI only.

I can connect my TV to the Internet and my PC. I don't have an aerial.

During setup you're supposed to set up the TV remote to work with your set top box but the TV failed to do so.

According to this you should be able to use component or composite, looks like I was wrong about the set top box.

The manual for some of these TVs mentions selecting 'your preferred programme provider', among other 'On TV' settings.

Can you access any of these settings?

That may be the case but since I only have Scart sockets on my set top box from UPC this is something I can't check.

The setup is slightly different for Ireland but I did go through it several times and I was able to select my region and cable TV provider and, I think, also my set top box but I could not change channels with my remote like they did in the video.

I was able to select UPC as programme provider during setup. I am missing the On TV page in the Smart TV hub.

Component & composite are just analogue video connections: composite video can also be output by the scart connection.

Using either in preference to scart would have no effect on your problem.
