No space on USB drive but no files visible on it either

Hi there, sorry if this has been asked before - did a quick search and didn't find any similar threads.

I'm trying to transfer a ~450mb file from my MBA to my 4GB USB flash drive to watch on TV. Being told there's not enough space on the drive, despite the fact that I've deleted everything off it.

I've tried making all file extensions visible through finder, but nothing's changed.

Anyone know how I can find and delete whatever's taking up all this space? Thanks.

EDIT: Apologies, literally just found a simple solution. FWIW, emptying the trash on the desktop fixed it. I didn't realise that that would include a mounted USB.

I had a similar problem before where the usb drive was not disconnected properly and some of the files got "left behind" on the usb drive.
I had to format the drive to get rid of the old files.

When you delete an item in OS X, it gets moved to a hidden folder called .Trashes on the same volume. Emptying the Trash in the dock tells OS X to delete the contents of each .Trashes folder.

The problem is when you delete file from a memory stick they are not fully gone.... my suggestion would be to make a folder on your desktop,, copy whatever important files from the usb to that folder and then erase that usb in disk utility... Job done

That's really not necessary when you can just empty the Trash.
