Electric Window stopped working

    Hi
My drivers electric window recently stopped working. There was a clicking noise as if it was trying to open or close but nothing I'm afraid. I looked up a few threads to see what it could be and most of them read similar that it was the regulator. I brought it to a garage at the weekend and they said its the motor not the regulator that needs to be replaced and said it would cost €320 supplied and fitted.
Would this figure seem about right ? The car is a ten year old and an Audi tt so am not sure are the parts more expensive cause its old. This is the first problem I've had with the car in over seven years.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated as I know sfa when it comes to mechanics and cars
    Thanks in advance

€320 supplied and fitted wouldn't be too unreasonable for that. These motors can be a bit pricey and the labour is fiddly enough with removal of door card, access inside the door etc.

It might be worth checking costs of the motor online yourself and even check out breakers for a second hand unit. If you do get a used one it might be worthwhile replacing the brushes before fitting and it would be a DIY job if you're any way handy.

I have a couple of Jaguar XJ6 window motors if they happen to be the same one. Worth a look see?

Is there somewhere you can get brushes to fit car window motors? Exact fit, off the shelf, made to order, or DIY bodge-to-fit?

Patobanton, does the TT have frameless windows? If so, do the windows dip a little automatically as you close the door? Ive found that adds to the labour time, assuming the fitter makes any sort of effort to adjust it right. (not a given)

Thanks I just didn't know was it a bit on the pricey side or not ; I'd be no way handy on replacing the brushes etc I'm afraid

I know bmw will charge you 160 for 10 euros worth of motor. But an aftermarket motoror could be got new for under 80.
If it's a main dealer fitting audi motor, then the price seems right. Independent garage fitting non audi motor, seems high, but could be a very fiddly job.

For that age of car I'd be inclined to source and fit used parts.

I'd be surprised if a window regulator wasn't a generic VAG part that could be found in all manner of models.

Sleeper Service: Yes the windows are frameless and they do dip a bit when you close open the door
Its actually not an Audi garage that I went to its the advance pit stop chain that I went to as was where I got it serviced before
    Tks

sounds like the spigot on the motor shaft has worn - giving the clicking sound and the dropping window.

Well, the frameless windows on sone manufacturers autodip on purpose when working right, I wasn't seeing that as a symptom of anything - more as an indication that the final adjustment be a pain in the backside.

Patobanton, for that price I would not accept anything but a perfect job in the final adjustment - no gaps giving wind noise and the glass does not foul against anything when closing. (im not familiar with the TT frameless windows but the problems I described will happen with a MINI)

Be no harm to get another quote from a garage if someone you know can recommend a good independent garage.

I just rang the garage I bought the car of 7 years ago; They quoted me €500 without looking at it as said it be about a 3 hour job so their labour rate be more expensive than a country labour rate than advance so I guess it wasn't so bad after all

Hi there, FWIW Audi tt motors are available online, new and used, but the prices vary wildly. Guess you get what you pay for. The best seems to be Carparts.com and they have them from $35.00 right up to $250.00. Otherwise they seem to come in at around $200-$270. These are all Dollars, so do the maths.

I suppose if you supply the parts you might save on the overall costs but you might be hammered on the labour costs. Prepping might help, as in, remove the doorcard etc. beforehand, if you feel up to it.

Also, the Jaguar item is part number GNA1731AD, in the event that it matches.

Btw sogood, where do you get brushes to suit car window motors? Have a perfectly good motor at home needs new ones.

Well patobano, did you get sorted with the window?

Also, if anyone does know the easiest way of getting new brushes for window motors in general (but specifically MINI) it would be great to hear? I have one motor, with maybe a second one on the way, perfect except brushes are worn to the point where they popped out and broke.

I've it booked in to get fixed Monday morning; I looked around and €320 seemed to be the best price going; Tks to everyone for their tips and recommendations

Any company that refurbs alternators etc. should be able to supply them. I've also read on jaguarforums where owners have sourced brushes from radioshack, maplins, radionics and the like. A search online should throw something up, might need slight adjustment/modification, but a fraction of the cost!

Ok, thought you might have first hand experience as you were recommending it. Only feasible so if you have a spare set of motors, or you can do without the car in between the chances you'd get to extract and refit the motors.
