Hows going ppl, well i bought my car on 1st of nov and was without tax till now as kinda have some bills to pay, and decided to tax it now but i have to pay 3 months arreas nov-dec-jan and another 3 months of new tax! All in total around 400 quid.

Does it worth doing ownership transfert trick?

When I bought my car a few months ago the tax was out 2 months. The previous owner gave me the money to back tax it, cos the new laws. The girl in the tax office said I only paid from when I owned it and that the previous owner didn't have to pay either for the other months.

May be worth changing ownership but not sure if that law really came info effect since Jan this year!

The new law is on now so i think saving 3 months of arrears of 200 quid is worth it.
    Thanks for the info

Yeah save yourself some money and transfer it.

I'm pretty sure they will close that loophole at some stage.

If you have been using the car, you should pay the arrears.

Depending on the age and value of the car adding 2 more owners could cost more than the€200 your going to save. Also someone doing a history check would be wary of 3 change of ownership in less than 6 months.

So if you change ownership you can avoid back tax? Surely they copped onto this no?

Who would you change the owernship to? Would this not have a impact on the insurance, I always thought you can only insure a private car if your name is on the ownership.

    It would.
That's why you sell the car to a friend and don't drive it. Then you buy it again and you can drive.

You should be prepared to be without the car for at least 10 days:

    * Time it takes for the signed transfer of ownership to arrive in Shannon
In most cases, the insurance policy is now void so car should not be driven, or stolen.
    * Time it takes for Shannon to process and post new VLC
    * Time it takes for new VLC to arrive, sign back to original owner and post to Shannon
    * Time it takes for the signed transfer of ownership to arrive in Shannon
Once Shannon have processed the transfer, you should be able to tax it in the tax office without the VLC.

Whether it's worth the hassle depends how much you value your time and inconvenience of being without a car vs. back tax being avoided.

Keep a paper trail to show to potential buyers. Personally, I'd only be wary of stories that aren't backup up with some evidence.

I have the car insured on my name and and the car now its not on my name, im driving it everyday, if they stop me, i ll sayi just bought the car and im waitting for the logbook! Simple as that :)

It's not the Gardai you need to worry about. I'm open to correction, but afaik if you were at fault in an accident while the car is not registered in your name, your insurance company can nullify the policy on the basis that you no longer have an 'insurable interest' in the car.

Thanks for info, but i don't care about that as i have excess of 3000e on my insurance, so i will never make a claim!!!

Yeah, you should pay the arrears, then maybe Tina will be able to pay less next year.

who's Tina?..The point is he should pay it because it's a legal requirement, and that's the only advice that should be given

There's no legal requirement to pay tax on a car.
OP didn't specify if he used a car or not.

Why are you doing that? (Just out of curiousity) ?

It is very possible to be insured on a car that is not in your ownership once you make them aware of that issue. Temporary transfers etc. I once drove my brother in laws old car for 2 months as I waited on delivery of a new car. Transferred my insurance onto it, told insurer the details of the owner and the circumstances as to why I was driving it. No issues.

I've had the opposite experience mickdw.

I'm waiting for the day someone posts up they used this loophole and the car was stolen or in an accident while it was in someone else's name. As it's been already said it's ok to insure someone else's car BUT the insurance must be notified first and it's usually just temporary.
