Garmin Elevation Wrong

My Garmin Edge 705 tells me that I am at 280m when I am clearly at sea level. I have tried resetting it and I have also tried saving the sea level location and setting the correct elevation in that saved location. Alas, neither has made any difference.

It does report the correct climbed meters for a spin, but everything is 280m higher than normal.

    Any ideas?

280m is quite significant, I would expect a 10m difference as normal, but not that much...
Try clearing down the old gpx files off the memory and update the firmware of the device...

I have been getting strange 'height' readings from my 800 recently and found this article -> http://singletrackworld.com/forum/topic/garmin-edge-800-elevation-issue-any-one-else-had-this
I set mine manually at sea level at xmas.

Considering the very low atmospheric pressures we are getting recently with the storms , it co-incides with the above link, this is what I am putting it down to.

Went from Firhouse to the coast today but when I got there I turned my garmin off, as I was meandering for a while. I show a cliff like drop of 300 meters to 8 when I started it back up.

I have decided not to wreck my head wondering why.

I have a 705 and you can set an elevation calibration point. I can't find a decent document on how to do it, but basically, I have a saved waypoint outside my house. You manually set the elevation of this point, or I think you can get the GPS satellites to update the elevation. When you start a track within 30m of this waypoint, the unit updates the elevation to that set point.

So when I turn on the garmin and its acquired a fix, it might give an elevation of -123m or whatever. When I hit start within 30m of my waypoint, it automatically goes to 15m.

That doesn't stop the unit drifting off during the spin but at least its the same at the start

I had the same trouble with my 500.

Solution i seen that works is leave it outside for 10-20mins so it can get it's bearings and then manually set somewhere outside as your elevation point so that everytime u start the garmin and you go by that point and the garmin will get the correct elevation from the point u manually set.

    If that makes sense ?

Thanks, I had tried setting it manually during the spin via a saved waypoint but it made no difference. I will try doing it outside my house to see if starting the spin from there will work.

This seems to be a known issue with the garmins, Strava has a button to correct elevations based off the map location (these are all known, so elevation based off GPS is kind of pointless).

I would not be sure that setting it outside your house will work.

My Garmin 500 never picks up the correct elevation when turned on.
I always have to set the elevation manually.
Proper pita, but I put it down to yet another bug in the devices. These thins are as bad as Blackberrys, we just need to wait a while until a better head unit arrives and makes them redundant.

How do you set it manually?

On the 500 you go to the menu.
    Choose GPS
    Choose Set Elevation

There are ten slots (waypoints) where you can preset the elevation.

In my experience this works for one trip. On the next trip my preset elevation won work, so I have to do it all over again.
    Takes about 2mins each time.

It's easier just to use the turbo tbh. No faffing about with elevation.

Oh, OK, I don't have that option.

Except that the garmin connect elevation correction seems to be insanely generous. I've done flatish spins in Meath that it claimed had over 2,000m of elevation gain.

I set the elevation at my work place and when I started my ride it behaved properly. Seems that was the difference rather than setting it mid-ride. That said, my speed home seemed over egged. I was recorded doing almost 30kph when I defo felt that I wasn't.

Firmware: there is an update so I am applying that now.

Will assess again in the morning.

My 705 was acting up yesterday. Climbs were reading 0%. The week before after going around Blessington lakes and over the Wicklow gap my head unit said I'd climbed two metres. Uploaded to strava and I'd climbed over 1,400m.
Never had an issue before the last few weeks.
