I got a ticket today but drive a southern car. I know they can post letters but can they do anything else with you if you don't pay??

Not sure about the North but in GB they create a virtual file on you and, in the case of offences where you can get penalty points you could find yourself disqualified

If you are pulled by the NI police at a later date, you risk the fine catching up with you then. Would also be worried if you subsequently got another ticket, I wouldn't put it past them to lift the car there and then.

If you are a frequent visitor suck it up and pay. A friend of mine got a number of tickets over time while he was resident in the UK. Not sure for what but......eight years living in Ireland, obtaining Irish insurance with his UK licence and he decided to drive to London to see some friends.
Driving out of the presbytery in Whitechapel he was stopped by the police. They seized his car.
Apparently after he leaving England an application was made to the courts to have him disqualified on foot of non appearance.
He was disqualified for six months but you have to apply to get your licence restored which he did not do as he was not aware he was disqualified.
He had to get the priest to pay the pound fees of £230; show he was insured to drive it and leave his car at the presbytery for three weeks until his licence was in order
