New kitchen fitted worktop all scratches

    Hi folks
Got a new kitchen fitted last week and had tiler in yesterday. Very experienced guy did a great job but this morning noticed the worktop is all scratches. Worktop is granite effect formica. Obviously looks crap with everything else so new. I'm going to phone the kitchen company in the morning as I don't think the worktop should scratch this easily. Looks like a knife was run over it in several places. Our old worktop was there for 15 years and got lots of abuse.
Just wondering how it can be fixed though? Complete replace of worktop?
Not sure how easy that would be. Sink would have to come out and they probably glued worktop to top of units.
    Anyone experience anything similar?
    Cheers
    Mick

Quality of a lot of work top designs are not great these days, this was pointed out by the salesman ( fair play to him) but her indoors wanted it, so we were careful and it hardly has any scratches after 8 years.

Your workshop didn't get scratched by itself !

Ok is the worktop high gloss if so they do scratch very easy what the kitchen fitter should have done was clean the worktop down show it to you to make sure their was no marks on it that's what i do then i cant be blamed for marks now sometime we have got worktop in that is all scratched but i do check them over before i fit them now your problem is who done it you cant really fix them only cover them up with a permanent marker.

Yeah it's high gloss. It was perfect when fitted and obviously scratched by the tiling. How much will it cost to replace though? Tiling only cost 150 euro. Guy has been tiling for 27 years and done a lovely job. He is coming back tomorrow to finish the grouting

If he's been tiling that long he should have known better that to cut, store, sort, etc tiles directly on a high-gloss surface. His problem, his cost unfortunately.

Phoned him and he calling today to look at it. Either way a new worktop will have to go in. I just hope the cost isn't to high. Plumber will have to be involved to take out and reconnect sink and electrician will have to come back to disconnect and reconnect hob :(

High gloss work top is around €150 per length their 3600mm and then what ever it costs to get the new one fitted and its a bigger job with the tiles on i can tell ya now if a tiler scraped a worktop that i spent nearly 3 hours fitting he would hear all about it

He called and is sound about it. Said call kitchen fitters in morning and get a price to sort it. Surprised it scratches so easily. Might go for non gloss finish if they all this scratch prone

You should be able to get the same color in a Matt finish also stay away from them wood effect worktop they mark easy Matt ones come in 4600mm so might not be as expensive. Well fair play to the tiler for sorting it out most would not

Tiles are sitting on worktop but not groutred and tilers sayts he will remove the first row I'd needs b. The corner press on the small worktop might b resting on it, either way its going to have to be replaced

Well 650 to replace the worktop. Was hoping they would come in around the 500 mark. Almost tempted to go with granite but reckon I'd be looking at 1800 :(

I dont know how big your kitchen worktop is but I got a price of 1200 for 2 eight foot long pieces with 2 holes cut for hob and sink in silestone from my local granite place. That was for stone only fit yourself

Wow so the kitchen fitters were back today fitted matt worktop which is fine but in certain parts of the kitchen there's up to a 4mm gap which they half filled with white mastic while some spots they didn't fill at all. I wouldn't mind but I paid 650 for the worktop so expected it to be fitted as perfectly as the first one. Was it to much to expect?

When the tiler grouts it will that fill the holes so they put the top up to the tiles not under them this worktop will put you home

    Will the grout be waterproof?

    Will the grout be waterproof?

Look at it this way, its waterproof in a bathroom. Would that suffice in a kitchen?

Only if they use waterproof grout!
Grout itself isnt waterproof anymore than concrete is.

The back edge of the worktop will be sealed but when i am fitting them i always run a bead of silicone along the back just in case you could use white tec 7 and clean it with tec 7 cleaner its mighty stuff you can use it on silicone as well put on whatever you use spray on cleaner then wipe with your finger no mess at all tec 7 is €14 and the cleaner is another €8
