Would the State have owned much before NAMA? And what about now? Could they do something like in Britain where they get tenants in to farm it? Could be a solution to young people getting into farming?

Well the state owns 500 acres at Abbotstown (Blanchardstown) where the "Bertie bowl" was ment to be build. Keoghs (crisp lads) had it taken this year for spuds. All nama land around me (north country Dublin) that I know of is being farmed, and to be honest there's hundreds of acres of development land here. In Rush last year they leveled out the top soil that was piled up years ago and not built on and farm it now. So nama us making money letting it out.

very good idea....they should give on a lease-to-purchase scheme to young farmers who have relevant courses etc done and not from farming background/have no realistic hope of getting homefarm....it is too closed up an industry for people to realistically get into unless they have huge backing behind them

sadly I have no doubt it would just end up in strokes being pulled by politicians etc:mad::mad: or huge waiting lists...though to be fair that would be expected (waiting lists)

most state agriculture land is being farmed or leased. Around me there are a couple of farms along with the IDA owning about a 1000ac that I can think of off hand. Who owns places like the Curragh? also the army must have a fair old land bank also as you could dodge bullets it might be a runner. The president has a fair only grazing platform in the Pheonix park and only sticks a couple deer on it. Imagine a big rotary parlour put out the back of Aras and jobs a good one

They always make hey or Haylage in Phoenix park. Don't mind milking, I'd love to plough it and put in under spuds and grain. Plenty of water for irrigation. Haha

I just got the idea when I was flicking through the Farmers Weekly. Had a little article about some tenancies coming up around Britain. They were all of a good size though - over 150ac - not just the odd few acres here and there but proper holdings that someone could make a viable business out of.
