About a month ago now I went to get my wisdom tooth out, I am no fan of the dentist but do suffer bouts of anxiety, anyway I went and for the most part felt fine until I got there.

I had 1 numbing injection, she poaked at my tooth but I could still feel it, this went on 3 more times and I was getting more and more worked up, all in all I had 4 injections, and 2 spays of stuff to numb but I still felt he poaking at my tooth. In the end she gave up as couldn't give me any more injections and put it down to gum disease at the roots blocking the injections, so I go antibiotics and have to go back this Wednesday.

So I am crapping myself at the moment, I don't want to go through that ordeal again. Any advice? My dentist does happen to be in the hospital so does have access to various things such as sedation but that's something I don't want to have.

You will always feel pressure when having a tooth removed, nervous patients often can't accept this. Go for the sedation, sounds like you would benefit from it. If you go for local anaesthetic again, the result is likely to be the same as before.....

Seriously, go for the sedation, you'll barely be aware of what's happening. I had mine out under sedation and my only memory of the procedure is of the surgeon telling me to keep my mouth open and feeling great when I started to come round, it was like it never even happened. If you're a nervous patient, it's the way to go. I'm not a particularly nervous patient, but this was the only dental work I'd ever had done, apart from cleanings and the thought of stitches and stuff freaked me out a bit. Also, if you have health insurance it may cover it, VHI paid for mine.

I was just coming on to post pretty much the exact same thing!

Went to dentist this morning to get upper left wisdom tooth out, was given 4 strong shots of local but still felt extreme pain when he tried to pry it out. I was terrified and in an awful state. He said there was probably an infection a round the tooth and gave me anti biotics to take and stitched my gum back up. Appointment made for two weeks time. I'm petrified.

OP, you say that when you went back it was ok, could you tell me a bit more to put my mind at ease? I'm so worried in case its not an infection but that the tooth is stuck in the bone or something!! :(

Sure I pretty much guarantee it will be the infection, I thought I was being palmed off with an excuses to be honest, but when I went back I had 1 injection, she had a poke first I couldn't feel anything, she then got the plier things out gave a wiggle, still nothing, next thing it was out. I felt damn all, she said I might have pain after and about nerves and stuff in the jaw but I have felt nothing.

Your dentist will have taken Xrays, they will know if its stuck on a bone, my Xray showed dark around the roots which was an infection

Thank you :) The pain in my face at the moment is horrible but you've really helped to reassure me and make me feel a bit better, thank you!
