    In short:
The Wild Atlantic Way is set to be Ireland's first long-distance touring route, stretching along the Atlantic coast from Donegal to West Cork.
    Main Aim:
The Wild Atlantic Way is one of Fáilte Ireland's signature projects to rejuvenate Irish tourism. Once fully-realised, the project will:
~ assist in increasing visitor numbers, dwell time, spend and satisfaction along all parts of the route
~ re-package the Atlantic seaboard as a destination to overseas and domestic visitors
~ improve linkages between, and add value to, a range of attractions and activities
~ improve on-road and on-trail interpretation, infrastructure and signage along and around the route
~ direct visitors to less-visited areas
~ build on the work completed in these areas already and assist businesses, agencies, local groups and other stakeholders along the area to work together
reinforce the particular strengths and characteristics of all of the areas located along the west coast, while offering the visitor one compelling reason to visit.

    *** ~~~ ***

Their will be plenty of Tourism Briefings (some have been held already) coming up in varying parts of Ireland. I would urge people to attend as I believe this to be one Lovely & Special Tourism Idea for our lickle Island :)

All details can be found here regarding the When & Where of the briefings.
I hope to attend either the Caherciveen or Tralee briefing, pending circumstances on each day.

Please post if you attend, or have attended, and would like to share you own personal views on this initiative.

    Thanks,

What is the idea behind it for the tourist?
Will a tourist be able to walk or cycle the route? Will it be one continuous path or bits all along the coast?
I guess if one could walk its length from Donegal to Cork without being on public roads for much time it would be attractive. A lot of parts are there already.

As I understand it (haven't had any reply to my direct enquiry :( ) it is a driving route, so yes it is continuous and signposted all the way from Cork to Donegal, but no, it's not really a walking/cycling route. Maybe they'll work on that next - but I expect it would be well over the 2500km road-trail.

Apart from the "straight-line" route, there are several local loops intened to take you to places just off the track but worth visiting. Again, I haven't been able to find out if these are included in the 2500km.

This is all a very new concept for me in that I don't know much about it yet. In my opening post I did say "I believe this to be one Lovely & Special Tourism Idea" , but it does seem to be in early stages though as I can't seem to find more detailed info, as yet.

~CelticRambler: Who was it you directed your queries at, that you haven't heard back yet?

It's the cycling aspect that would entice me :)
