When I click the name of my collection eg fiction on my paper white it says
    Total: 4 items
    in cloud: no items
    on device 4 items

Does this mean that my books are not backed up to the cloud?

    Thanks

    Pretty much.

I have a Kindle Fire and the only apps and books that back up to the cloud are ones I've legitimately downloaded from the amazon store.

Then it shows that they've been downloaded to home. If you remove them from your device, they'll show up in the cloud.

If you send your books sourced elsewhere (Gutenberg et al) to your kindle via the send-to-kindle address, they will be backed up in the cloud. You have 5gb of cloud storage for personal documents - which is what books sent to your kindle are classed as.

    Sideloaded books aren't backed up.
